Just got the car (my first morgan) a 95, 4/4. Just greased the front end and was surprised to only find one grease nipple per side and the bits and pieces I've read suggested one top and one bottom. One of couple things have happened here: 1.I've misread the articles regarding the front end 2.I didn't see the other nipple Which is it?
also one side oozed from the bottom of the stub axle assemble one oozed from the top .....1'm guessing that not a good thing?

Its most likely you have a one shot oiler at the top rather than a grease nipple. It should be a rigid tube. Engine oil is injected by a foot operated switch above the clutch. More recent cars have grease nipples top and bottom instead of oiler.

I'm ready to be corrected, but I think the top grease nipple is on cars which have a thrust bearing under the top main spring. Unless your car has been modified it will still have the damper blades to fulfil the same function. The damper blades are the thin spring steel blades running between the stub axle to the chassis side rail. I wouldn't be too concerned that grease showed at the top of one and bottom of the other- it has obviously got into the bearing itself. Any great excess in that area is in danger of contaminating the front disc brakes. Well done for tackling this basic maintenance job, some new owners find it quite daunting.

As jbk says you could have a one shot oiler system and some of the actuators (mine) is under the LHD bonnet at the front - press for 3 seconds maximum about every 200mls otherwise you can oil up the front discs. Only actuate on start up when the oil is at it's thickest. The gomog page also outlines the one shot system. You also need to clean and re grease the damper blades after checking for wear if you have them fitted. http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan6.html#DamperIf you are not confident and you are a club man maybe join your nearest MSCC unit and sit in with another member through a service. I believe there are a few members on TM..

Thanks Gerry. As there's no upper nipple does that mean I should use the one shot.....the principle of it gives me the willys as you can see the grease (and where its goes)?

Bish, When you press the button you will notice a slight drop in oil pressure too.

I'd convert to grease at the top. Just screw in a grease nipple and junk the oil stuff.
Before Spanner Juggler jumps in, just a grease nipple. Don't fit remote greasers as with a nipple, you get a quick look at the front and can see if anything is going wrong. Plus you waste grease filling up the tube!

Using the oiler washes the grease out - probably not a good idea! If oiler still fitted you will see a pipe leading away from the top of the kingpin, through the inner wing back to the bulkhead. When replacing with grease nipples, fit some blanking plugs to end of oiler pipe then suggest tying the oiler ends up to the cross brace behind the radiator. This allows a future keeper to refit the oiler, if they really feel the need to...

I have not used the Oiler on any of My 3 Morgans since the year 2000. Also have thrust bearings and no blade or bushing. Although I drill the king pins down to the grease reservoir and use the top zerk to do the job. This is difficult for the average Morgan Owner to do. So just grease the top and bottom. There are all sorts of discussion as to how often one greases. To start I would say once a month or 500 miles. With experience You will be able to tell when You need grease. Your steering will get stiffer. As I use Vesconite Bushes which are self lubricating (to a point). I grease My rigs once a year. Again Vesconite is not easy to source and requires machining. I and My friends are set up for it. Not for everyone.

replacing the oiler inlet with a grease nipple sounds a great way forward, I'm still young enough to crawl under so I wouldn't want anything remote. How difficult is it to do this?
