I first came across this hot start issue with my Gilbern Invader. Starting was a bit of a lottery until I obtained the correct starter - but - although it would usually start from cold, it would never start hot, until after about 20 minutes to cool off.
The reason is that when stopped, the hot water migrates to the top of the engine, and the cylinders add to the heat, so the pistons tighten up. So although the common view is that cold starting is harder than hot starting, that's not the case.

My Roadster does the same but the battery seems fine.

I had a similar issue with my 4/4, it was because the starter solenoid was getting hot from the manifold. little bit of shielding in place solved the problem.

I tried it meanwhile with jump leads from my Audi and the hot engine started. The voltage is slightly lower than 12.7 so that I finally came to the conclusion to better replace the battery. Just ordered the Banner P6009 with 60Ah and 540A, hope this will resolve the problem. Many thanks for all your helpful comments/explanations!

Yesterday I received the new Banner battery and replaced the old one. After a test drive I restarted the hot engine without any problems. With the higher power of the new battery one can even hear that the starter turns quicker compared to the old battery. Problem solved!!

Good to hear you have it solved, always nice to read outcomes, so many post with problems and never come back with feedback on suggestions, when we know what fixes things we all learn so thank you for posting.

Thank you and it was finally your idea which led to the decision to simply replace the battery ;-)

I have just bitten the bullet and ordered a new battery, as mine as of late, although I generally us my CTEK battery conditioner regularly, it has started to become somewhat suspect, won't start very reluctant to engage starter after a few days without use and not on conditioner, five minutes on conditioner is enough to wake it up into life.
Mine had the original factory fitted Banner - decided not to pay through the nose for the dual polarity option of the original that the Roadster only uses the standard layout anyhow! and have opted for a Duracell 075 DA62 battery, I'll see if this aids the reluctant hot start and report back.

Have your starter itself checked. What condition are the brushes in? Cold start ok so is heat causing brushes to "stck" or make poor contact? An euto electrician can bench test the motor but if heat is the problem then a cold motor in a vice will not show up brush issues. If you are ok to do it yourself take the motor off and open it to check the bushes. That assumes you don't have a brushless motor! Failing diy checks ask the electrician to visually check the brushes. I recently had issues with my Bosch electric drill. Intermittent working. Opened it and found worn brushes. I had spare brushes and it was a simple job to replace them. Just read your update re new battery! Glad you sorted it.
