Been off talk morgan for the last year. looking forward to going to m3w treffen. Have read this particular thread with interest. Adding the 280mm sender does not improve the fuel read out situation at all. the short and long sender both show zero fuel with the same level in the tank. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...egular-one.htmlI advise people not to buy it. How you you arrive at that conclusion?

Hi Charles, Welcome back on the forum. We missed you. Looking forward to see you in Grindelwald. About the coffee....... did you ever ordered a glass of wine in a restaurant ? They always serve you half a glass or less and on the cheque is always a full glass. If you order a bottle you get a bottle and you pay a bottle. Why you only get half a glass and pay a full glass ? But ......... the fuel sender/rack is a different story to my opinion. It only would make a difference if you could pay at the petrol station the amount your VDO meter is showing

How you you arrive at that conclusion? I'm questioning that comment also. The 250 is 250mm from the top flange and the 280 is of course 280mm from the top flange. Or at least that would be an apples to apples comparison on the measurement anyway. So "assuming" that both senders read 100% at the top and 0% at the bottom, the 280 sender would be 30mm deeper into the tank. It would not be possible for two different length senders to give the same reading at the same fuel tank level.

Both senders are not accurate at all but the 280mm sender is better than the original 250mm sender.
They may send different signals at different cars but while the short version indicated 0% after 60miles (100km) at my M3W the 280mm sender needs some 120 - 140 miles to read 0%.
For me the only important reading is 100% after filling. I know it's some 400km (250miles) till empty. Usually I search for petrol stations after driving 300km.

I understand what you mean Charles and you are right, the range for full to empty for the 250mm sender is 2.5 to 72 ohms and for the 280mm unit it is 2.5 to 75.5 ohms, so not quite the same and theoretically the contents may well show about the same for both at a given level. The reality of it is that if you replace the 250 unit with a 280 one, with the fuel level staying the same, the indication shows about 20% more with the 280 sender. My contents now shows 0% after about 190 to 200 miles from full rather than about 120 or so with the 250mm unit.

Question, how deep the tank at the fuel sender location? Does the 280mm sender come close to the bottom of the tank when installed?

Yes the tanks measure 11 inches (279 mm) top to bottom on the outside excluding the sender mounting flange, so a 280mm sender must be close to the bottom by the time you have alowed for the flange and tank material thickness.
