Dear All, there has been a large crash today knocking out one of the country's key motorways. A bridge collapsed on some lorries and a motorcyclist after it was hit by a digger. Fortunatley there was only one major injury and they are in a stable condition. Many of us 3w drivers will be heading out over the coming days. I am curious as to how long people will think it will take to clear the road back to normal.
I guess they need to demolish the whole bridge now. clear it without damaging any more road tarmac and paint replace the motorway furniture.
not an easy task.
Please vote.

At the risk of having every TMer having a pop at me, is this something we should be having a vote on? Surely it's too important to be so trivial?

BBC news have said it should be clear from lunch time Sunday. Thats unfortunate for us in the M3W aiming to get the 10.50 tunnel tomorrow morning, and I thought we lucky in missing the Saturday Bank Holiday rush.

i am suprised that they let the traffic clear by going under the half standing section, rather than making people turn around in an ordered fashion.

Not something I reckon we should be voting on. It's a nightmare on the roads around here. We need to make our way to Kings Hill shortly - usually meaning a short journey on the closed part of the M20. I've been looking at alternative routes - it could mean a long detour to avoid any congestion on the surrounding roads. The latest update is here

I am just interested in people's opinion of the HAs ability to handle a crisis. Ah, the Highways Agency bless 'em. Pre-austerity days they used to have 'journey time' targets set and were measured against them. These days, there's probably only half a dozen left in London. The Traffic Officers out on the roads do everything by the book. They cone off and await recovery, which is usually stressed as they have to fight through miles of tailback to reach the breakdown. They are specifically banned from towing a breakdown to the hard shoulder for both H&S and litigation from insurances, and so we all fume because Shazzer from Basildon didn't renew her key fob battery in the immobiliser or something equally trivial. I'll be very surprised if anything happens this side on Tuesday..

I'm just trying to imagine what it must be like for the lorry driver to write out the insurance claim form describing what he has just done. Probably fair to say he might need to look for a new job but probably not a driving one.
