Just read the above in the latest Miscellany. I have to say it read like one of the Corporate Business Reviews when I was working rather than something from a car enthusiasts club. The club appears to be run like a business with the focus on making money rather than doing things for the membership hence one of the main reasons I'm out. I also belong to the Land Rover Series One Club which is run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts with an award winning magazine and an excellent spares section with numerous technical articles. Of course the LRSOC needs to make money to offer all the services it does but it still feels like its a vehicle enthusiasts club rather than a business. Sadly I doubt the MSCC will ever change!

I too have seen the many paged review. Every page full of corporate bullsnonsense. Unbelievable and unrecognisable as the enthusiast club I joined all those years ago. However unavoidable this type of thing has become these days (but I don't really believe it is unavoidable), it certainly nails the coffin shut for me.
Glad I didn't renew last year.

Please remember that these are just proposals at present. It is worth taking the opportunity to feed back either direct (as per Miscellany) or through your Centre Secretary.

My own view is that changes along the lines of those proposed (£70k investments with nothing to say if that is one off or annual) cannot be made without being put to a general meeting of the club. As written up, I would vote against.

Also, any activity designed to break even will make a loss!

The only way to run a successful not for profit concern is always to make a small profit and have a mechanism for recycling the proceeds. Anyone who has run events will know all this, but it's surprising how many folk don't.

Some truth in that.

Not a member of the MSCC but I recognise the syndrome from other organisations I am a member of. Usually the result of some one trick pony getting to a position of power and applying his day job skills to the role. In this case it sounds like someone with " management skills". I've seen the same thing happen with a lawyer in charge and the whole organisation becoming legalistic in approach. But more often, and its happening again with one of my clubs, you get someone in charge who maybe is a really nice person but has never run anything before and the club goes to hell in a basket.

I've come to the conclusion that its simply a part of club life and happens to every club sooner or later. Unless they have me running the show of course.

I have been a member of MSCC since 1968, and I am seriously considering not renewing this year.

The whole ethos of the club's committee seems to be driving us down a business driven model. The strategic review synopsis that I have seen appears to drive the club further down this road

A club like ours should be run for the benefit of its members, not for profit (although I accept that events have to target a profit)

The report looked to me as if the club is heading towards becoming an offshoot of MMC.

I am so pleased to read all of your opinions on the report, I was beginning to think it was me.
Although there are many, many individuals who own Morgans and really enjoy them ( TM rules o.k.) my personal perception based on many seasons of runs, shows etc is that the vast majority of MSCC members are just not car people and, from what I can see of this report, it just compounds my perception. There seems to be a lack of simple joy in using the car in the company of others.
As for the MSCC being "of the members, by the members, for the members" which is surely what a car club should be, well I for one will not be renewing when my membership expires. Even the much praised insurance scheme is twice the price that I pay via LV.
However, having got that off my chest, (sorry if I have offended anyone) lets be positive and hope, for those that do gain some benefit from the MSCC, that this proposal does improve matters for all and, in that respect, I wish them well.

+1. It reads like a board briefing paper to me. But as someone who doesn't put any effort into running the club I guess I respect that at least people are making efforts here.
