Ok all you experts ...

My S1 has the standard exhaust. Understated na every acceptable, but maybe a bit 'tame'.

I met up with Dave (lightsphere) a few weeks ago and was quite jealous of the noise he now is producing ... Sorry, that would be his car !!!! ...

Any thoughts from those of you who use the cars reasonably outer about 'liveability'? I can carry on a conversation on a hands free Bluetooth earpiece with roof up at up to 70 mph and with roof down up to 50 ... How are the modification sports exhausts to live with, and roughly how much do you think I would need to budget for?

I'm no expert, but...

The most important consideration might be whether there is a '+1' with whom you will go touring, weekends away etc.

My own dear swmbo tells me I have ruined many a lovely car with exhausts that are so noisy I struggle to hear her speak. Strange that I should keep making the same mistake...

I was also considering this. As Librands no longer make/stock the system, a one-off cost is now £1500 plus!

My S1 is very quiet comparatively. I'd had the car over 2 years when the factory informed me that it has big bore pipes whilst in for service! Don't know their origin or anything about the boxes except oval rear exits. I mainly use the car for distance stuff and certainly wouldn't swop it for a boy racer system.

I have the librands ,quad pipe,rear exit exhausts fitted to my S1 -



- the sound is not too intrusive,particularly on tick over/idle.I also fitted an ITG air filter which further improves the sound (and pick up!) on acceleration eek

I quite fancy the side exit pipes but a number of people have commented that they can be a bit 'wearing' on a e.g. a motorway run....

As the hooligan that has most likely caused this thread, in my defence it is all about sharing that V8 sound. Don't be selfish let everyone have some. There is nothing like the explosion when that button is pressed, birds leave their nests, washing is brought in because thunder has been heard, it is all part of the fun. Although on the other hand it is a stab in the heart when everything is set to launch and all you get is a click. Only a S1 owner would know the pain.

The single side pipes are noisy under load and high revs. When sitting in a steady state on a motorway I find them fine. The difference is in the light acceleration and hard acceleration stages. They get noisy as soon as you open the throttle to accelerate and proportionately to the angle of opening.

I Love em. The single side exhaust is okay, the dual exhaust is definately LOUD, always.

The quad rear is probably the best for general life from the cars I have heard.

Love your rear diffuser JBW. Especially with the quad pipes. Nice mod.

For series 1 the quad rear is the pick. Side pipes on the S1 are an expensive option - at the factory it's reputedly a 5k job..

On s2 and later going to side pipes is cheaper (I had my s2 converted - around 1500 about 7 years ago). On the later cars I would go side pipes (especially on 4.8 engine)...

My S1 has a quad exit system fitted from Infinity exhausts in Bristol. In 2012 it was £500 for a SS system.

It is louder than stock as we now have 1 small silencer each side raft of the rear most cats. let me see if i can find the cold start vid……

Under load it is good, Tunnels excellent and touring fine. Classic le mans (1000 miles), scotland (1200 miles) and this weekend goodwood (400 miles)
