Apologies if this subject has appeared elsewhere (sure it has) - but I can't find a solution to the problem. 1987 Morgan 4/4 (147000 miles) rear springs replaced with 6 leaf springs about 8 years ago (Mike Duncan); horrendous metal against metal noise from rear near side when hitting a recession in the road (but not a bump). Checked all the nuts/bolts and that the spring harnesses are free and lubricated. Not exhaust nor brake related (so far as I can tell). I guess the issue with a recession in the road is that the wheel/axle has to descend before being thrown upwards when coming out of it - so effectively having to travel twice the distance of hitting a 'normal' bump? No-one (neither Mike nor the local garage) can trace the source.

Have you removed the rear near side shock absorber and checked what happens when you operate it through a full movement cycle?

U-Bolts not over long on the inside where they sit over the chassis ?
Is it metal - metal squeak or metal - wood as I am thinking possibly anti tramp rubbing on the cut out in the panel behind the seat (if yours is done that way)

Don't think there will be an anti tramp on that car. Check bracket that shocks are mounted on behind the rear brake drum, they have been known to break.
