Just browsing on Halfords web site to buy my birthday present (socket set) and noticed all their Advanced Socket Sets are currently half price.
The only problem I have now is what to spend the £175 I saved on!

Cool

I've got one of their medium Advanced sets from a few years ago, certainly excellent quality

It survived my flooding without any tarnish

Just looked at site! Going to have to buy a set.
Silly question but for a 1991 4/4 will I need an imperial set ?

Looking at them, and the handles etc. they look very much like the ones sold as "Stanley" over here....

A 1991 4/4 is likely to have a Ford CVH engine and box, which is (to the best of my knowledge) likely to be metric. The axle would be a Salisbury , so I am not sure about that, but likely to be A/F.

The chassis and running gear is likely to a mixture of whatever MMC had to hand at the time. Most fastenings should have been metric by that age, but there are likely to be odd ones which will be a/f or imperial.

If you buy a comprehensive metric set, get a small set of a/f sockets which you can use with the drives from the set, and if you want more coverage buy a set of a/f spanners.

Others know this era of the 4/4 better than I , so they will no doubt chip in also.

I still have my Aircraft size Britool 3/8" square drive socket set purchased in the 1970's now toting a few additions.

At the time it was the brand of choice before Snap-On appeared on the scene. As some wag opined the life time guarantee of the latter was funded by paying the price of three lesser sets.

Seems I use them all. British Standard, Metric and SAE. I think A/F is the same as SAE but not sure. I also have a British Standard Tap and Die set that get used more than I like to think. When travelling I used to carry all this stuff, just in case. But other than a couple of screw drivers, pliers and maybe the common wrenches, I rely on My Cell Phone and Credit Card.

Just done a cambelt change on a 1981 CVH engined XR3 so can confirm engine has metric bolts. Salisbury axle has UNF fasteners perhaps because it has it origins in the US. There are a few Whitworth fasteners as well but not enough to warrant buying a complete socket set for!
