Having just returned from a long trip around the Scottish coast, I'd say my newish Mog has had a fair old testing. It's showing 3500 miles now and has, if this forum is anything to go by, made every distracting noise recorded but goes ok.

I note from the manual that when the fan switches on, they ask you to let it cool down for 30 minutes. Since the fan has been on a great deal, possibly 100+ times in one traffic jam and probably 100 times besides, I reckon we would never have got anywhere.

Is this an example of over zealous arse protecting by Morgan...or just rank silliness? Or, have I misunderstood something?

This was chilly Scotland, not the rest of the far wormer developed world, after all.

I would have thought a big V twin would have been designed to cope under far worse conditions and 200 degrees (the fan set cut in) is fairly optimal anyway. I would have expected it to be set there to prevent it becoming an issue. So why 30 minutes rest?

I thought the fan came on when the speed dropped below 10 mph

Mine is 2015. The handbook states 200 deg and below 10mph...but either way it states that if the 'over heat protection' is invoked, you should stop for 30 minutes.

The overheat protection (skip-fire) and fan coming on are 2 different things

It sounds like you have a "newish Mog" with an oldish handbook. As others have mentioned, skip fire overheat protection has been superseded with the Urban Cooling Kit fan fitment. The cooling fan will come on most of the time when you are stopped with the engine running.

Does anyone know how many amps the Urban Cooling Kit pulls while running?

In hot rods with electric fans, it's a rule of thumb that for every 100 cfm it will pull 1 amp. So a 2000 cfm will run at around 20 amps.

Where I'm going with this is that with an electric fuel pump, fuel injection, running lights and headlights on, there isn't much "extra" left in the alternator to run the cooling fan. And keep in mind that usually at the speed that the cooling fan will come on, your motor is not putting out massive amounts of amps. Fans are designed to be running max output in the 14v range. They will put out drastically lower cfm at around 12v, if you're fully burdened on the alternator.

It may not be an issue at all, just an observation.

The 30 mins stop is recommended when the engine goes into skip fire mode owing to overheating. The urban cooling fan should prevent this, certainly in Scotland. Agree with Planenut that you may have and older version of the hand book or that, more likely, MMC haven't revised it. The fan is programmed to come on at under 10mph hot or cold so don't worry about it but do check with your dealer.
