for me there is a higher risk to damage the wheels with the hammer as you have to hit harder than using the hexagonal spanner
I have two eared spinners and it was dealer recommended to lay a small piece of leather on them before hitting with copper/hide hammer.

Personal taste imo. I've had hex and spinners on old MGs. the hex you could buy a large steel 'spanner' to avoid wacking anything, whereas for spinners you can buy a laminated wood section with the profile of the spinner cut out of it.

I settled for the two eared spinners. Every time I see one with three I think Jag! This ain't no Jag. Or a James Bond thriller... I changed out to the two eared spinners and really like them. Three is just to busy looking for me. Two is much more fitting for the M3W. Just my $.02
As for being safe, they been useing them on race cars for ever. I agree ...

Ken Shapiro,
I have always had spinners in preference to the hex nuts for two reasons. First, the stupid little spanner in the tool kit is not up to the job and whilst hitting it with the provided hammer it always seems I am going to hit the wheel arch. Second, once fitted and tightened, the spinners are self tightening and look the part but as always it's a very personal choice. Why are spinners exclusively self tightening? I believe he's referring to the anti rotation of the left hand and right hand spinners. The front hubs are RH and LH specific and while rotating down the road the spinners are "supposed" to stay tight on their own. Years ago Chrysler cars all had LH and RH lug nuts. What a pain they were when you mixed them all up. They found that it was not that big of a deal and conformed to all the other US manufacturers and use only RH threaded lug nuts since.

But he said he preferred spinners over the regular hex lug because the spinners were self tightening.

Moss sells a neat plywood tool that wont harm the spinners--works a treat. You hammer the wood and not the spinner

Yes it's ply. They do the job, but aren't designed to last.
