Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone having just picked up an Aero S1 today, what a marvellous car, except.......when reversing into my garage slowly, riding the clutch, the gearbox sounds like a bag of spanners - does anyone else get this?

The drive train is clunky, surprised you haven't noticed it going forward too

Aluminium tunnel acts as an echo chamber!!!! Part of the joy to minimise with sensitive clutch control ... was glad I had read about it otherwise would have thought some fundamental issue!

They all do that sir. You will get used to all the clunk's & clicks, thay form part of the car's character.

we were told that if we noticed lots of noises just put the hood down and that helps....so that's a quick fix

Welcome to S1 ownership!
You shouldn't notice any more noise going backwards than forwards !
Is it simply the transmission clunk common to S1's or ???.
You'll get used to the transmission snatch after a few miles and learn to avoid it.
Keep us posted.

If it's any consolation, I have an Aero S5 that's two days old and it sounds the same. Having owned an S3 mind the sounds are oddly comforting :-)

My thoughts too. Could the noise in reverse be originating from further back in the driveline, like the diff for example? Moving backwards, the sound/vibration could 'refer' forwards. It is not uncommon for diffs to complain a bit in reverse, especially if turning. In my experience, the racier the car, the more the diff doesn't like reverse. (And an S1 is certainly at the racier end of the scale). If you think it could be the diff, it might be worth checking what friction modifier additive the S1 diff should have, and when this was last done at service.

Mine used to clunk on gear changes at low speed or pulling away before I got used to the car, now it's minimal.
However it makes no extra noise reversing, and it never sounds like a bag of spanners..

Thank you for all of your reassuring comments & fast replies.
Day 2 of Aero ownership brings sunshine & an empty car park to check out that reserve gear properly.
It does seem fine when the clutch is fully engaged, the issue being confined to clutch engagement/disengagement, & a more gentle & deliberate approach reduces the noise further. I can therefore only think it is down to the unforgiving nature of the drivetrain, although I had not noticed any issues in the forward gears.
