Semi-autonomous would be nice, I'll drive to the pub and it could drive me home.

A good friend of ours lives in Milton Keynes and has a lodger who is working on the Google autonomous car project. His current work is in the area of applied ethics and morals e.g. would you swerve to avoid hitting a woman and baby if it meant hitting a crowd at a bus stop (that sort of thing). There's a lot more to developing these cars to operate on the roads than many people think. Also the question in Singapore is what do you do in a car when there is no chaperone?

There are indeed many complex issues to be resolved, and I think Sospan is right, the initial introductions will probably be in 'simple' situations like HGVs on motorways at night, or very slow-moving (sub 20mph) vehicles in cities.
I've heard the moral question raised several times, but I've never heard answers to these 2 questions:
1. Has the posted dilemma ever actually been recorded as actually having happened? If so, what was the outcome?
2. The rational (and also probably instinctive) decision for a human driver would be to take the course of action which maximised their own chances of survival. Why would an autonomous car also not be expected to provide the same level of protection for its occupants?

It's not for me (yet), but then I said the same about Faceache and Twatter. If you are one of those who likes to be in control, I image it's like being the passenger of a good learner driver, BUT with a blindfold on. You have a feeling they are in control, but you don't really want to look away for too long in traffic, or nasty little country lanes...

Watched Jay Leno's Garage on Sunday morning on Dave. RS7 round 'Sonoma'?? using autopilot, then Jay Leno beat the time of just over 2 minutes by 0.8sec. He's a fearless loony by all accounts. Good programme for those who haven't tried it. Lunch with Andretti. Ride in Andretti's Ferrari, then in the back of a two seater Indy car.
Auto-pilot cars are for people who don't like driving. Not for the likes of us.

I have got Jay Leno on series record. I enjoyed the Audi race in autonomous v Jay. Yes, the car performed well but on a race track. The basic ability is there but in the video I don't remember Jay actually overtaking the auto car. I wonder how it would have reacted to an outbraking inside line dive on a bend? It was programmed to find the same line round the track and could repeat identical lap times so....what happens when racing? I wonder when somewhere like Heathrow will have autonomous buses/limousines? Maybe relatively soon. Some factories already use trolleys to follow wiring underground to carry payloads on predetermined routes. Similsr could work for cars.

An excellent article. I agree fully re the reliance these days on the car being too dominant at the expense of driver skill. Safety features get added to "protect" occupants but this creates an "invincibility" attitude and a lack of feeling for driving. Drive too fast too close....the ABS will save! Over complicated controls and distracting features. has set up hands free for her work mobile. I refuse to do it. I can wait until stopped to use the mobile. Not every call/text is an emergency are they? There we are....small rant at the end!
