I wholeheartedly agree. Its better to let 99 guilty people free than to jail one innocent man.

The due process of law and justice was completed.
However, I often left thinking "what actually happened?".
In court, the truth is selected. A story is built from 'facts'.
Sometimes there seems no real insight into what actually happened rather than what was used to build the case for the prosecution and defence.

The girl concerned was too drunk to realise what was happening until it was too late and was in tears. I was embarrassed and horrified but there were other more senior members of the office present who wanted to hush it up. I simply felt powerless in the circumstances and had no idea what to do. I left the company shortly after this event, and I think the girl did too, but even after 50 years recalling it makes me feel upset and guilty even though about the only thing I could have done was support the girl if she wanted to make a complaint.

On reading the secret barrister I would change my original description from "lying" to "dangerous".

...but if you are found not guilty, you are (and must be) considered innocent.

It's why I think the Scottish "not proven" is a useful addition to the possible verdicts.

No. Throughout your life you are guilty of many many things and innocent of many many others. These are matters of history not legality. Courts are about proof beyond reasonable doubt and their verdicts dont ever alter what did or did not actually happen.

I dont have much sympathy with the accused in this case. It is alleged to have been some sort of gang bang with participants takings photos of the proceedings. If thats how they behaved then they deserve everything that has happened to them.

Mob rule because football clubs were frightened out of employing him by pressure groups and ill informed athletic stars. We must accept the morals of the society in which we live. The current moral climate is the product of our generation. The fact that a woman likes a gang bang is not cause to think badly of her. After all many people join swingers clubs or go dogging. Men are not always the guilty party.

Many years ago in a previous (working) life my company sponsored a semi pro football team located near Manchester. One of our 'commitments' was sponsorship of a tour to Scandinavia - same involved an overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. We had a tour escort along with us from the travel company involved, she was an attractive lass full of life and loved being around 'the boys'. On the ferry crossing after much drink was consumed a similar event took place, it was even filmed, the difference is she wanted it to happen, encouraged it to happen, enjoyed it and didn't cry 'rape' the next day. We only learnt of the event the following morning, many of the boys participated in one way or another, as senior members of the group it is safe to say we were shocked and very disappointed in both the players and the girl in question, but in their mind they did nothing wrong, legally they are correct morally maybe not....the girl didn't even seem to be particularly embarrassed the next day and even milked the attention. She continued to escort the group thoroughly professionally for the duration of the trip. My points are, no matter how much we would like to place all young women on a pedestal not all of them are made of sugar and spice and all things nice, some have the same dark desires as young men.
