What a nightmare for you... glad you're ok. What was the reason she was driving on the wrong side of the road? I read your blog and thought one posting said 'semen for soggy chips'. Oops! I did a quick search for the word semen in my Blog but it came back blank - I am wondering if I can redress that imbalance! As for why an elderly lady loses control going around a bend in the road is not that hard to understand - I have to be careful what I write here because she lives in the same village as me. Fortunately I have a good witness who was following her who was able to give a statement to the police and I understand that the police intend charging her with driving without due care and attention. One day soon I hope to be able to laugh it off but for the time being my bruised condition prevents any such joy.

Driving on the wrong side of the road? If you drive around Budleigh Salterton or Sidmouth it is a common sight; along with not stopping at junctions or parking 4 feet from the kerb. And Tiverton is not good either; my sister in law lives just up the road and last week reported to police an elderly lady for driving the wrong way around a roundabout to take the third exit! (making that her first exit)

Graham, Sorry to learn of the demise of your tintop, but the good news is it protected you. Can't comment on replacement, the last large Volvo I drive was a 240 Estate (apart from the C30 that broke after 11 months). Still fancy one of those big old 240s Graham, Yes I do know the feel of a Volvo 240 having once been loaned one as a courtesy car: Its full of character and so very much like a wide beamed boat, I felt I was steering on the open ocean - but of course it was along one of our Devon lanes. Tank not needed if you have one of these...

The last V70 was a very nice, comfy, spacious and well designed piece of kit. But the D5 engine was feeling its age back in 2008 (poor economy when driven short distances when cold) and was really the only sensible engine choice at the time, the seats lacked side support, the geartronic was dimwitted (not really fixed until 2015) and I never felt it was quite as well screwed together - although there are now plenty of high mileage ones about. The quality of leather used is very high, the split 40/20/40 seats are really helpful (as is the optional flat folding front seat), and the high performance stereo is really impressive. (I warped the front brakes on a V70 T5 (phase 1) after some enthusiastic mountain driving (Saab seats are/were better than Volvo ones (IMHO))

A friend of mine recently replaced his V70 with a BMW 5 series estate. He couldn't believe how far technology had moved on!!! And a friend of mine has a 5 series which needed a replacement timing chain and I understand that some use oil in excess. My Volvo had none such issues and ran faultlessly throughout 100,000 plus miles in my hands. I have access to the BCA website and when I was last looking for a car I couldnt help but notice how many really high mileage cars were Volvo. I guess its the combination of good reliability and really really comfortable seats. My last one, an S60 , was the most comfortable car we have ever ridden in and that includes Rollers. Totally reliable except for the gas system ( it was lpg)fitted by Volvo themselves. I shall have another when the current panzerwagen goes. P.S. Just had a quick look now and there are several V70 with just under 200k miles up for auction
