Below is an excerpt from my email with Diane at Heacock Classic Insurance. I assumed that according to the VIN Number the vehicle would be registered as a Motorcycle. Am I wrong?

Ken,

I’m checking with American Modern to confirm this information, but if this one will have to be registered as a 2016 Motorcycle, I’m afraid I won’t actually be able to help with coverage. The other Morgan 3-Wheelers I’ve added have been registered as autos rather than motorcycles, but those were also in states other than CA.

Because this is a classic policy, I can only insure motorcycles that are 20 years old or older as a stand-alone policy. *IF* the state will allow it to be registered as a vehicle, I can help. Or, alternatively, on the off chance they would allow it to be registered as an older year – say, as the year the original Morgan 3-Wheelers were originally produced, then I could also help. The problems lies with a 2016 MC in California.

That's a very easy call to Dennis Glavis at Morgan West in LA.

310-998-3311

It probably varies state to state, but Dennis being located in CA could give you the affirmative word for the CA rules/regs.

Hi Ken,
I don't know if the issue is just because it's a 2016 model. My M3W is a 2013, it is registered as a motorcycle in California and State Farm insures it. I bought mine through Dennis at MorganWest. As has been suggested, check with him.

Thanks for the responses.

Dennis verified that it needs to be registered as a motorcycle in California. Also he referred to it as a Cyclecar but I don't think that is an option as far as DMV goes.

I had a tough time getting a reasonably priced policy. Ultimately I insured mine through Hagerty's.

Man, that's a LOT of money.

I had my '40 Willys couple insured with Hagerty for $80k stated value for around $850/year. I have my '76 Harley insured with them for $275/year and $13k stated value.

Prices must have come up quite a bit.

Do they limit annual mileage for $1,800.00?

I did fill out an online application with Grundy Worldwide, collectorvehicle.phly.com On their website the drop down menu listing for a Morgan 3 Wheeler only went to 2015, not 2016. I completed the form and received a quote for $524.76 year with a stated value of $45,000.

Then I called and talked to an agent regarding the year of the vehicle. He adjusted the year to 2016 and emailed me the documents to print out, sign and mail back along with a picture of the car (I can't wait to see one myself!) and my payment.

I thought everyone would like to know about what seems to be a very reasonable quote. Still waiting for any news from my Dealer on the Build.

I am 53 years old and have a totally clean driving record, but unfortunately I live in the most expensive County in the most expensive state in the country! The insurance Lobby here is very strong and we all paid dearly for it.
