Seriously, if you wash your car then put it away/don't use it for a while you will get marks behind the pads, this causes slight pitting which in return causes brake judder, I presume most people like me would wash their cars if they went out and got it dirty, then put it away in the garage, when you next come to move it the pads are stuck to the disc, this causes the damage, it's easy to run round the block after washing to heat up the brakes and evaporate the moisture.

When the S1 was in production someone made drilled discs and 6 pot caliper conversions. I have searched fruitlessly to no avail for these. Perhaps someone on here will remember?

We made a 350mm 6 pot upgrade kit for the S1 at Mulfab, we only ever sold a couple of sets so didn't continue it.

The S1 front discs are Morgan specific and are one casting, with directional vents. This means that one disc is rotating "the wrong way" for its vents to work properly and this can cause overheating issues and warping. However, its more likely as mentioned earlier in this thread, that there is a pad shadow or pickup on the disc where the car has been standing. This causes an inconsistent friction surface as the pad shadow is more "grabby" than the disc itself. This causes brake judder and can feel like a warped disc.

I frequently bead blast the discs on the racecars to remove any trace of pad material build up, especially if I am trying out different pad materials.

A light skim should remove the problem

How much where these kits?
I know the GTN has upgraded brakes.. what was the difference?

Thanks Simon smile

Just a couple of further thoughts on this.

Simon, you mention that the discs were Morgan specific. Incredible then isn't it that they didn't have two casts done to cater for left and right installation!

That said, given there are no air ducts to the front brakes, is the airflow in there really so smooth that the direction of the vents matters? Could this have been Morgan's thinking and explain and why they didn't bother?

Cheers

Bean counting.....

The vanes in the casting actually pump air through the disc as the disc rotates, brake ducting only enhances this effect

The kits were about £1350 + VAT
If there's enough interest I'll remake some kits....

The GTN doesn't have uprated brakes. They are identical to a normal S1 Aero

Interesting that the GTN had what I presume are 2 circular air ducts in the front wings.

These had the matching S/S mesh covering as the rear of the grille and were,I assume, designed to funnel more air to the brakes.

Personally,I also think it enhances the 'look' of the very slightly 'slabby' frontal area.

The only S1 ,other than the GTN's ,that I have seen with this mod. is Viper's lovely blue S1....

I seem to recollect that Richard Thorne had a race disc/caliper set at some point, might be worth a call ?

I had the disc skim done on mine some time back to remove a wobble. It made it better but actually what made more difference was removing the 4 year old tyres and replacing them with new MPSS as these had gone out of band due to garage duty.

Ask any of your local independant garage and MOT centres and they will be able to point you to someone that does it, most of them sub the work out.

The RTCC kit was the Mulfab one... I helped design it when I worked there
