Just for clarity's sake for our American friend, the top diagram is a dynamo , the bottom one is the starter motor, and part 27b is the solenoid.

Ah yes! Should have mentioned that. Actually I just wanted the solenoid. The parts explosion of the dynamo and starter motor is probably not much use to him. Unless perhaps he just needs to replace the brushes.

I suggest by-passing the earth/ground circuit by putting a jump lead between the engine block and the battery. This will diagnose/eliminate poor connections.

hopefully that's it, not terrible because both solenoid and starter are 50 years old, I should just go ahead and do the starter now

Do you kwow if you have the earlier or later starter motor? why i ask, the older ones can be problomatic to get spares for. Try to plan the rebuild in advance.

Problem solved after a lot of detective work needed new solenoid and the WR wire from ignition to solenoid was no good so I replaced it car runs like a charm now
