Forgive my ignorance, but how?

I didn't see my first web browser until around '94 and social sites didn't arrive until nearer the end of that decade? Was I just very late to the party? cuckoo

I guess you are not aware of Usenet. It was arguably the first social media system and commonly used by university researchers and such.

Peter, I was also a user of Newsgroups in the late 80's and with dial up connection and some of the large groups around, it was a lot more difficult than it is with forums like this. There was also very little moderation and regulation, so it was almost a case of anything goes on some of the groups..

Those were the days, eh? Dialling up on a 1200 baud modem, I used to spend a lot of time on comp.databases which was very civilised, but you're right, some of the flamewars especially on the alt groups were pretty spectacular.

Crikey in the 80's all I was doing was messing about under cars. And building my tool collection. Something which never ends......

It's very strange when you think about it and realise that you (some of us that is) have been mucking about with computers since the time before any of what we take for granted today existed.

The tablet that I am using at the moment has a processing power and storage capacity that was science fiction in those days, as was the capacity to make video calls and take digital photos.

Interesting that Chester Gould dreamed up Dick Tracy's wristwatch radio in 1946 which was upgraded to two way video in 1964. The inspiration for today's smart watches?

So we have a number of places where we share our car history, for a giggle here is my computer history.

ICL 2904 mainframe terminal (acoustic coupler to 300 baud.
Commodore 2001 PET (Calulator keyboard 1k RAM, cassette player)
HP 75a scientific computer
Commodore VIC20
BBC B (got a floppy disc drive ! Elite lost a year of my life)
Apple IIe (various) Castle Wolfenstein, wonderful with paddles
Became an IBM field engineer, 3080/90's and Mini's
Became an Apple field engineer, Apple II, III, Lisa, Mac 128 upwards then II (PC like range)
AppleCentre took on IBM & Compaq so i became IBM engineer 311270 (November 1983, 270th person certified in the UK) which was interesting.
Went into networking
Went into Mobile
Cannot work out whats next outside of Apps.

Don't forget all the AOL stuff that came before X11 and the browser ? I think my old Compaq field engineer AOL login still exists. Anyone need a Rompaq for a Deskpro II/286?

How time accelerates. A 200g smart phone now has more power, graphics, battery life and capability than a 10kg Compaq Portable computer as well as a typical laptop of 8 years ago.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
