I know that this subject has been mentioned before especially on the series 1's(cannot find previous replies). Has anyone had experience of their series 4 Aero's starter solenoid clicking when trying to start the engine. The click is intermittent and only does it if the car is left for a week or so. If I keep pressing the starter button 3 or 4 times the engine will burst into life, sometimes it will fire up straight away. I have checked all the common problems sutch as earths and battery terminals (new battery fitted 1 year ago), always kept on trickle charge. This problem has been intermittent for a few years now and is very off putting. My thought is that the starter motor will have to be replaced, my aero is a 2008 Series 4.

Andy Packer, That is a first, I thought the Series 4 would be long beyond the fun we have with the S1 starter. Over time posts for the S1 have suggested a combination of the S1 PC925 battery having thin lead plates prone to cooking from certain conditioning chargers and engine heat, I take it the S4 has something more robust in the way of a battery, cooking of the starter motor from engine heat. Moisture, S1 more reliable when kept moisture free. Depletion of battery charge via clock and radio, car best kept with power disconnected. Lack of use of car adding to various starter system parts getting a light corrosion. Of course ensuring a good earth and clean terminals are standard to any car and are more likely a S4 issue than the S1 stuff I have quoted. Hope you find a cure.

If all other options have been sorted then it sounds like a starter solenoid issue (if modern cars still have one), or a poor connection within the starter.

Thanks all for the feedback, looks as if it is the starter. Probebly the solinoid contacts which I bet you cannot get to. Wanted to know if any other series4 Aero's have had this problem. Had the wing off today and had a look, looks as if it is a garage job as it seems as if you nead to remove the exhaust manifold for access (you cannot even see all the manifold bolts) its so cramped in there.

And to get the exhaust manifold off you have to remove the steering column and the brake master cylinder..... Simon @ SiFab.co.uk

On the S1 you do it from underneath after removing the underside panel which, if it's never been off before is a pain. If exhaust manifold needs to come off, is the S4 different?
Cheers

Cheers No you don't.... On the S1, you drop the steering column out the way, swear a bit, and wiggle the starter out through the side of the engine bay.... Simon@ Sifab.co.uk

Simon,
You've got me there!
I was advised to do job from underneath, didn't even try from above therefore. In addition my car being a left hooker presumably no steering column to remove, so happy to try job from above next time particularly if it's quicker!
Cheers,
Philip

Simon@ Sifab.co.uk Simon, i am curious, when you suggest drop the Column, can you just loosen the Column from the rack and move it to one side, or is it necessary to remove the column from its anchor point inside the cock pit too !!
