I installed the front Ohlin's shocks and measured the spring before hand at 6 1/4"

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p448/jvs1/Ohlins%20off%20the%20ground_zpsk0o3mztj.jpg

and after the front end came down off the jack onto the ground with the weight of the front end on the shocks now, measurement is almost the same. sorry for the upside down picture.

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p448/jvs1/Ohlins%20on%20the%20ground_zps4gus1nmr.jpg

this would lead me to think that these springs are too stiff and not allowing the spring/shock package to work well together. Also the shock/spring is at a 45 degree angle which may not be ideal for the shocks to work well?

GoPro video test ride tomorrow so we can see how the shock/spring setup is working in real life conditions.

I think the rear shock/spring setup may also have the same issue of having too hard a spring?

I'll have more pictures tomorrow.

My front spring lengths are at 164mm at full droop (car jacked up andwheels off the deck) and 153.5mm with load on. Call it 6 7/16" and 6 1/16"

Photo shows the preload (sort of)

I'll have a look at exactly what springs I have in the morning. Don't know if we will have the same free length and rate of spring

Had a look at my front springs, the spec is;
Ohlins 01095-49/130 L3414
Measured off the car but on the shock, length 164.4mm (6 1/2")
and measured off the shock, free length of 180.5mm (7 1/8")
Both measurements taken ground face to ground face and at the same point on the spring.

From some details I found on the web about Ohlins Springs the code means it is 180mm long with 57mm ID and a spring rate of 130N/mm (742lb/in)

Here is the spring with no weight on it:

Here is the spring with the weight of the machine on the front suspension

More later in the week

The string rate of 742 lbs I think is way too stiff.

Maybe a rating of 250 lbs for our M3W

Along with tge shocks mounted at a 45 degree angle?
Most applications are at a 20 degree angle so this maybe be part of the problem too.

I'll be talking with the ohlins tech later this week on getting an update spring to test.

If I understand your measurements correctly, the spring/shock is "topped-out" with the static weight on the front? That would make for some very squirrelly handling I would think with no suspension droop available at all! The 45 degree angle and the leverage of that along with the location in-board from the spindle gives the suspension some mechanical advantage over the spring, but there is no way that it should be topped-out at static ride height.

JVS, I too think I would back the pre-load off, the shocks really shouldn't be topped out with weight on them. From the measurements I'm running about 1/4" less pre-load than you are and have very supple suspension that certainly appears to be using full travel.

Yes, backing off the pro-load is something we'll try but the 750LBS spring is too stiff too.
