They might be for many, but I didnt work as hard and as long as I did to have to economise in retirement and live like an asian peasant. I intend to use large wasteful big V8s as long as I can afford them and can still drive, and I suspect from your list of vehicles that you have a similar view.

I am only here once and I dont intend to be responsible. happy3 God forbit, people will be going TT and eating low fat next.

Someone mentioned on this thread about the national grid threatening rolling blackouts

Have they already started as our electricity in Croston has gone off for about half an hour 3 times this week which just happens to coincide with it being the coldest week yet this Winter

Well it won't be long down here with the silent cars I can tell you - the doddery old farts step out in front of you now with an oil burner so it'll come soon.

That's another advantage of the V8 and Librands they hear it laugh2.

That will never happen Dean , ever been down one . I was 16 and my uncle got me a trip down . Its not fit for rats never mind men . When they closed Murton 25 years this week . The first thing my father in law said . ' they should have closed the bastard years ago ' and he never swears . Maybe in the far distant future when we come to terms with the crap of global warming and the con artists getting super wealthy out of it . When they look back, then they may have shafts sunk into the ocean bed from out at sea and robot machines doing the work that men did , with it being inspected by computers on land.

Well if the news is to be eleven today then by far the biggest polluter to greenhouse gases is farming with the methane from cows being a major contributor. So perhaps the logic is instead of giving up diesels we'd have more impact all becoming veggies.

Topical for us as swmbo has come out of hospital today after spending a week quite seriously ill from a blocked kidney stone and been advised she would dramatically reduce her chance of getting kidney stones again by becoming a veggie. Don't know if that means I can get credits to set against higher diesel usage or I can double my meat in take if she goes veggie. wink

Illogical. The reason that cows fart so much is that they are vegetarian. So the only effect of you going veggie is that its you rather than the cow producing the gas. Plus maybe an effect on your social life! ooo

I thought sheep produced more than cows... smile
For those wondering about diesel locos, the latest IET News has an article about converting old Underground trains to diesel to run as commuter trains in the Midlands.
I'll dig out the link later...
Probably produce less pollution than manufacturing new electric trains for those services...
As said before - the whole shebang needs to be treated holistically, not just piecemeal (and little pieces at that...).

I for one would rejoice at seeing the end of diesels on the roads, although for trucks and buses there is not yet a viable alternative, so this needs addressing before any large-scale bans come into force.

I don't know why people talk about power station emissions when it comes to electric vehicles, and yet only consider tailpipe emissions from petrol and Diesel engines, as if the petrol springs up fully refined at the petrol station. Petrol and diesel need to be sucked out of the ground, brought ashore by boat, refined, distributed by tankers, and then pumped into the car. The refining process alone takes about 1kwh of electricity per litre.

I love petrol engines, just as I love steam engines, but they're a very inefficient method of providing power. The only saving grace that's given petrol and diesel a 100 year success story is the enormous amount of energy in the fuel, that means we can waste 80% of the energy and still get a reasonable range and running costs.

Regarding Hydrogen, you still need to get the hydrogen from somewhere. If you refine it from natural gas, you may as well just burn the gas anyway. If you use electrolysis of water to create hydrogen and then a fuel cell to convert it back, you'll get back about 40% of the energy you put in, compared to 85-90% with a lithium ion battery. This doesn't include distribution of the fuel either. We already have an electricity grid covering the whole country.

Regarding battery-electric cars increasing demand on the grid, we certainly do need to up our generation capacity in the U.K., although with vehicle-to-grid technology, an electric vehicle can be part of the solution as well as part of the problem. Electric vehicle batteries rarely stop working, they just suffer some loss of capacity, and once tue battery has reached the end of its life in a vehicle, they are designed to be used for grid storage, storing wind and solar energy when it's available and putting it out when it's most needed.
