In our village of Croston in the North West of England we had at least 4 blackouts last week, each lasting around half an hour so I rang the National Grid helpline last night after another half an hour blackout and they gave me the reason for the power outages Large numbers of migrating birds hitting power lines all this week Do I believe it ?

A friend of mine used to work for the Hydro Board in the Western Isles and he lost count of the Swans and Geese (they were never allowed to reveal that of course) that used to get across the power lines - they would have to clear the remnants off the lines prior to restoration of the service. You can't win apparently the wind turbines are decimating the bat population now..

We do get large flocks of geese coming overhead as we often hear them so maybe all true The conspire theorist in me was beginning to think that the threats of rolling blackouts was being put to the test

Having spent 45 years working on the high and extra high voltage networks (11,000v up to 132,000v) this time of year when the birds migrate it happens frequently. Especially near lakes and wild fowl centres. i have seen a whole flock of Geese dead on the floor still in flying formation where they have flown into the high voltage wires.
The birds can burn down the wires which cannot be put back up in minutes as the circuits have to be made safe b4 people can repair them.
Please give a thought to the engineers who work at all times of day and night in all conditions to restore your power.
Electricity supplies in this country are some of if not the best in the world.
The Car is fast the sky is blue just be safe in what you do
