From February 2017 the offence of using a hand held mobile phone or other mobile device will be punishable by fixed penalty of £200 plus six penalty points. The safety course alternative has now been abandoned. Further, HGV drivers caught using phones or devices are now being reported to the Traffic Commissioners.

Modern cars have increasingly complex information screens. These have to be a significant distraction. (Phone/Music/Sat Nav/Engine settings etc)
Is their use included in this legislation?

Yes, I wonder if there will be legislation to ensure that such screens are only permitted to display limited information when the car is moving?

Obviously dodgy to be distracted whilst driving by screens showing data in front of you. The speedo for example. Seriously if you are having to watch the speedo because of some road side trap, you arent watching the road and that is dangerous.

"hand held" device is probably the key to this. But I agree with Howard, one should only simple dashes, showing junt engine RPM (analog display) with possibly a digital number showing if we're upshifting to 7th gear or downshifting to 6th wink

EDIT - Something like this, maybe

Isn't that one of the joys of the trad Morgans - rev counter, engine temp, oil pressure and sometimes the speedo, and that's it. Sit back and enjoy the drive. I have a radio/CD player, ordered by the first owner, that is so low down and far forward that I can't see it, let alone operate it, and so it will never be a distraction as it is never used.

My 2016 Merc built in systems comprise over 40 buttons and 3 separate menu systems plus a voice control which only works on the nav - not the phone, radio or climate systems.

The SatNav is as slow as a snail on valium taking 1-2 minutes (not a typo) to calculate or recalculate a route.

Not distracting at all innocent

Debatable, anything that distracts if it affects your driving there will be an offence. Careless driving, failing to maintain proper control etc. I do worry about manufacturers like Merc having large screens and Internet.

Howard I'm not going to bite on that one. You know as well as I do it only takes a split second to check your speed or you can set the cruise control ooo
