I have a radio/CD player, ordered by the first owner, that is so low down and far forward that I can't see it, let alone operate it, and so it will never be a distraction as it is never used. Radio/CD player?? You'll be telling me that you have exterior door handles next! . I thought "Poverty models" came with a set of Semaphore flags

From February 2017 the offence of using a hand held mobile phone or other mobile device will be punishable by fixed penalty of £200 plus six penalty points. The safety course alternative has now been abandoned. Further, HGV drivers caught using phones or devices are now being reported to the Traffic Commissioners. Whilst I feel that the penalty should be the same as Drink Driving I fear the battle has already been lost. My impression in the UK is that, especially in slow moving traffic, the use of phones is common and is simply not seen as dangerous. I'm on the way back from India where the use of mobile phones whilst driving a car or motorbike is endemic. It is the same over most of Asia. As others have said, the Morgan seems somewhere that is incompatible with a smart phone. But is it? I've dumped a TomTom for Google Maps on my phone. The phone is on a screen mount. It has a bluetooth link to the audio head unit so if someone calls me I can answer: the microphone is on the steering column cowl and works well. The call comes through the speakers, but I cannot make a call without much touch screen use, which I consider to be too dangerous. I can also play all my music in iTunes through the audio system, but I don't. I suppose autonomous cars will finally solve the problem.....!!

TBH it's better to stop and make your call or re-program your satnav, much safer. Well said! Blindingly obvious I would have thought. Same goes for drinking whilst driving ... (pause for obvious retorts) ... tip the head back to drain the last half of the can/cup and you cannot help but take your eyes off the road. Take a break; stop and enjoy the drink.

What is the story of a police driver single handed in a vehicle. To me similar to a mobile are they allowed to use their radio kit when driving? the act only applies to phones and hand held interactive devices not radio, so 2 way radio and CB radio are OK And the act doesnt apply to police anyway - any more than speed limits or parking restrictions etc. Who is going to investigate them and prosecute? And thats not being cynical. Its reality.

Got to agree with much of this. If I attempt to play with the satnav on the family car whilst mobile, I wander. Maybe not lane to lane but I wander nevertheless. But I can drive without issue whilst eating an apple. The difference is that I know where my mouth is without looking. I dont know what the sat nav says without looking. And that was the point I was making about speed traps. The only safe way to go though a trap in a 30 limit is at 20mph because that way you dont concentrate on the speedo. There is an age issue here as well. My ability to multi task at 71 isnt remotely what it was at 21. I am much slower to process multiple inputs.

The compulsion to use a mobile has become a common feature for so many. Just look at them walking with the mobile at the ready in hand, sit at the table with it, jaywalk whilst on phone. The simply MUST react instantly to to beeps of incoming messages, calls etc. This carries on into cars. It is not easy to enforce the law and so the feeling of not getting caught is high. Modern cars are also packed with toys and extras that distract the driver. My car computer has functions that are unnecessary. Who needs instantaneous mpg? You need to watch the screen to view it and it varies wildly anyway. What I think should be done is to build in function blocks for when the car is in motion. Head up display of speed is also a step forward, but only add in emergency warnings with it. Modern cars insulate drivers from the outside world and so many "safety" devices such as abs, skid control etc generate a feeling that the car saves you not your driving skill. Add in all the toys and it makes things worse. Why would anyone actually NEED to use a mobile whilst driving anyway? How urgent are the calls made/received? What life or death situation will cause the phone to be used? I can link my phone to the car for hands free but dont. If needs be I can pull over to check the call. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. You need your wits about you on todays busy roads.

If they're going to ban anything mobile that's distracting whilst driving....does that include SWMBOs? Obviously my SWMBO doesn't read TM There is a kit on the market for this..............it's called a gag Should come free with every car...! Years ago I did investigate the purchase of an ex-London cab. wasn't impressed until I said how comfortable they can be on long journeys (OK slow top speed, but comfortable with plenty of room to stretch out), but she said she wouldn't be able to sit in the front - exactly, I get to drive in peace... Popular that one!

The safety course alternative has now been abandoned. Further, HGV drivers caught using phones or devices are now being reported to the Traffic Commissioners. It's about time that the use of mobile phones whilst driving was given a more serious penalty. A few years ago the 17 year old daughter of a work colleague was killed when the car she was in ran off the road and in to an electricity pylon, The driver was texting at the time and he was uninjured but the girl received massive head injuries. After his trial he was given 3 years in jail. Does not seem much for taking a persons life.
