I suddenly got it into my head that I absolutely had to have traditional English Christmas cake and pudding for the coming festivities. After trying several sources I discovered Meg Rivers, in the top 10 of best Christmas cakes and, as it turned out, a small company in the Cotswolds that has about 6 hardworking employees. The response to my enquiry was so fast that I almost could not believe it and they promised that my order would be despatched today (well actually yesterday now as it is after midnight) their courier service has promised 5 working days for delivery so with a little luck it will arrive on the 23rd or 24th. If not it will be a New Year's cake. Certainly it won't be their fault if it is late. If you too have a sudden desire for a last minute Christmas Cake you could check out https://www.megrivers.co.uk/I was told that they often have visits from classic and vintage car groups, including Morgans.

I shall follow that link up Peter. Might be worth a visit from a small group of Pie Eating Morgan Owners I join in with occasionally We bought our cake from an aunt/neice team that do preserves and cakes and can be found at Worcestershire Farmers' Market. Christmas cakes are pre-order. Picked ours up at Wychbold last Saturday - looks lovely. As one of the supermarkets is using in its ad. "Bring it on"

makes ours. It is already baked & soaking now in brandy. Christmas cake and Christmas pudding are not part of the Italian tradition. In the past I have made the cake but the last couple of years we have missed out because I didn't think of it until it was too late. In effect the same has happened this year. I ordered a couple of their puddings too. If they had mince pies I would have ordered them as well. A nice mince pie goes down a treat. Goodness knows what my cardiologist would say about my Christmas diet: my cholesterol is just a tad above the desirable level as is my blood sugar content, blood pressure is fortunately good and under control with the minimum of medication. His theory is that individually the risk levels are low but taken together they multiply. He wants me to pursue a low sugar, low fat diet. As I said to him, Italy is not a low fat country. So we finished up with an "understanding" over Christmas but he insists I should make up for it in the New Year.

I am surrounded by the things at this end.....sorry JTL!
My wife has taken to giving cakes as presents (especially for those fortunate folk who seem to have everything). She bakes them in October and then we 'feed' them weekly until they are iced (or covered in a variety of nuts) in December - a week or so before delivery. We use all sorts of spirits and liqueurs to 'feed' them, depending on what is to hand at the time, so no two cakes or vintages are ever quite the same.
As much as I love Christmas Cake I am glad that all bar one (the big family one) go elsewhere, otherwise I might double my bodyweight in a single festive season!
A friend from Yorkshire also suggested that I should try a bit of mature cheddar cheese with Christmas Cake, I scoffed at first, but the two are surprisingly complementary - especially with a glass of red wine, port or whisky.
Enjoy your cakes!

thought everybody did that. Goes well with mince pies too, though I prefer stilton. In fact cheese goes well with cold apple pie. And whilst we are at it, my father back home in Bradford often used to make a desert out of yorkshire puds by sprinkling them with sugar. And they never were eaten with the main meal - they were always used as a way of taking the edge off your appetite before laying into the roast beef. In the old days cooking on a yorkshire range, the beef roasted on a rack half way up the oven and the yorkshire pud mix was in a tray below that positioned to catch all the drips that came off the beef. Made the pud really tasty.
