I'm in favour of motorway training. I trust the instructors would drum it into their students that they should always drive as near to the left lane as possible, unless overtaking. Also to leave a good gap when following another vehicle.

Presumably those who love in Lincs, Norfolk etc will have a motorway built..? No ! I am increasingly aware of non indicating drivers on motorways changing lanes right in front of other drivers at 80 plus mph its a bit scary ! In the wet its bonkers !

It's not mandatory so no need to build motorways in Norfolk or Cornwall! It sounds like they are planning the correct precautions etc, so I would support this. Would probably cut down on the number of middle-lane hogs for a start!

Make sense.
Just think about a newly qualified driver never driven on a motorway before deciding to tackle the M60 Manchester going into the Irwell valley section!
Even experience drivers can be intimidated by the three abreat heavy goods vehicles !
It is a four lanes section downhill.
In France my niece 17 years old has to do 2000 km accompanied driving on all types of roads before the test.
Then has to wear an A plate for 12 months.

We have something similar down-under for people who've passed their test (P - Plates). Limits apply:
Probationary P1 driver licence restrictions Hide
Must carry driver licence when driving.
Must display red P plates.
This restriction will not apply in the following circumstances:
a member of the police force and is driving a motor vehicle in the course of duty, or
a member of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) who is driving a motor vehicle in the course of fire fighting operations, or
driving an ambulance service or a Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) vehicle in the course of duty.
Must not use a mobile phone of any kind.
No hands-free or hand-held, or any messaging (includes reading text messages).
Must not tow another motor vehicle or a trailer.
This restriction will not apply in the following circumstances:
unless in the course of the holders employment and at the request of the employer, or
it is being solely used in connection with agriculture, horticulture, dairying, pastoral or other similar pursuits or commercial; fishing, or
an experienced driver is sitting beside the probationary P1 driver licence holder and a driver under instruction plate is affixed to the front and rear of the vehicle.
Must not drive a probationary prohibited vehicle.
This restriction will not apply in the following circumstances:
a member of the police force and is driving a motor vehicle in the course of duty, or
when a probationary driver is driving the vehicle in the course of the drivers employment and at the employer’s request, or
in the course of the drivers business or to and from the work place of that business, and where an Australian Business Number (ABN) is in force.
when the probationary driver is learning to drive a heavy vehicle and an experience driver holding an Australian driver licence for that category is sitting beside the driver and a driver under instruction plate is affixed to the front and rear of the vehicle.
Must not carry more than one peer passenger aged 16 to less than 22 years of age.
This restriction will not apply in the following circumstances:
a member of the police force and is driving a motor vehicle in the course of duty, or
a driver who is driving an emergency vehicle in the course of employment or duties or in accordance with terms of a contract or any engagement, or
whose driver licence is subject to a condition that prevents carriage of more than one other person, or
when an experienced driver is sitting beside the driver, or
who is driving a motor vehicle while under the instruction of a driving coach who is present in the vehicle, or
when VicRoads has granted an exemption from this restriction.
Must have a zero blood alcohol content (BAC).
Must drive an automatic vehicle if tested in an automatic vehicle. Visit Licence conditions to find out how to remove the automatic vehicle restriction.

As a younger driver I do think the driving test is in some ways to easy. The pass plus element should be compulsory as the standard of driving has definitely got worse.
Agree 100%...we wouldn't let our kids out on their own until this had been done. We also paid for a refresher course 12 months after they had passed. The result has saved us a fortune.... Eleanor: passed her test 6 weeks after her 17th birthday in 2003. Drove to 6th form in her Yaris, then to Southampton University for 3 years. No accidents, no convictions despite 30k miles a year as a key account manager for Bayer and Monsanto for the last 5 years. Andrew: passed his test 12 weeks after his 17th birthday in 2006. Drove to school in his Clio, then to Bournemouth University for a year: one accident, not his fault: rammed in the back whilst stationary. Car written off, he is left with whiplash damage and was partly responsible for him dropping out of Uni. But since then no accidents, no convictions and he is very quick...presently drives a 300bhp Focus ST. Both have full NCDs and Eleanor, as she is over 30, is insured to drive the Mercedes. Hell will freeze over before either drive Tarka!! Training is everything. I support the concept of a refresher 1 day training course for all drivers every 5 years and when I rode a bike I did one every 2 years. Everyone needs to have a qualified professional analyse and offer constructive criticism. We ALL develop sloppy habits.

Car hire companies in Australia are calling for all international tourists to wear a " T " plate on their cars and to be issued with a abridged version of our road rules. In Jersey CI all hire cars have a big "H" prefix on the car registration. An excellent idea.

I passed (and learnt to drive) in 1994. I passed my test first time, without having ever driven on dual carriage way road with an instructor or on my test. The roads around Northants (at least my part) were the A14, A6, A45 that I used the most, mostly duel carriage ways. I passed my test in Malvern. You had to be good at hill starts.
