Puff and the Magic Dragon. Marty Godsil of Seattle has sailed Dragons for years. It is a lovely boat and only a 3 man crew. Although I have never sailed one the Dragon was well presented in the Pacific NW. I raced a 6 Meter which is a bit bigger than the Dragon and takes a 5 man crew. The Dragon is a closed design. All are the same. A 6 Meter is an open design. All are different but the formula results in 6 Metres.

They tell me they are easy to sail but tricky to sail fast.
There's no shortage of strings to pull
No problem. Just tell Your crew to pull or let go the red line, or the yellow line, or the white line. NOT THAT ONE, THE OTHER ONE!!!!!!!!

I know absolutely nothing about boats of any kind, but that is a lovely looking thing. Congratulations.

Gosh, thats a big change - hi tech cat to a very traditional wooden day boat. 15kn to 5kn. But from my experience, a lot more enjoyment sailing it. Bigger definitely isnt better - its the reverse.
Are you going to race it?
Where abouts in NZ are you going to be based? Warmer north island or frozen south? We were out racing yesterday and it was gusting 25kn with a north easterly wind at 4C and rain! We won but you have to question the sanity of sailing in those conditions.

Yes it's a big change but no worse than going from a Ferrari to a M3W so I've got some form in that regard and haven't regretted that move.
I just want a boat I can slip my mooring on my own and stooge around the bay while my wife paints.
We are currently in Auckland but moving to Whitianga which is on the same latitude, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula.
I think this will fit the bill, unless somebody bequeaths me a Wally

That hull is wonderful. I am sure you will work work out how to sail her as fast or as slow as you need over time , and have a lot of fun doing so.
