Sorry, Keith I should have mentioned I’d tagged onto an old thread. If I can drag myself away from “The Howe”, I might take a quick run over to Cairnbulg tomorrow for a look, it also happens to be the home of the best Vanilla ice cream in the world.

I did go to Cairnbulg Sunday past, lovely day and delicious ice cream.
The closest wreck is the “Sovereign “ the “Ocean Maid” nearer the beacon.

I also had a tour of a brand new trawler that day preparing for its maiden voyage, heading for the Porcupine’ Bank in search of Tiger Prawns.
She was built in Macduff just a few miles round the coast.

Quite an event when they launch at Macduff .... all the friends and relatives of all concerned on the harbourside in their Sunday best .... miss them building the big wooden boats there ... when they were doing that the view through their big double doors was special.

Some wheelhouse! ... more like the Space Shuttle than an old trawler with a wooden wheel, a binnacle and an old radio that sometimes worked 🙂

You’re not wrong there, Keith, we had a slap up meal back in August, the only snag was the vessel wasn’t ready. Like most thing delays due to supply chain issues caused headaches.

Interesting engine room, are they CAT gensets that then run electric motor driven props ? rather than traditional direct drive diesel engine to propshaft ?

Oh, or even Z Drive thingies, Azimuth ?

Those are the auxiliary engines, the main engine drive a conventional prop shaft, you’ll see one of the video feeds in the wheel house of the underwater propeller.

Great photoset Ewan, thanks. For sure there will be a large degree of redundancy built in perhaps even to the extent that paper charts may still require to be carried aboard, perhaps even a sextant too.. Causes me to wonder if crew might still be trained to use that kit..?
