Gear-knob, that is... on a Ford Type 9 gearbox... how do I remove it?
I've been gradually cleaning the interior and I think that the leather gearbox cover would be easier to clean out of teh car rather than deep in the footwell but I cannot see how to remove the gearknob to allow the gaitor to pass over the top.
My knob has a standard-looking Ford knob and about one inch down from that is a metal elongated dome that seems to have a rubber joint with the main stick protruding from the gearbox.

Thanks

The stick it's self comes in 2 parts with the rubber joint. Ignore this, it won't come apart and if you do get it apart you've broken it...lol

The knob itself should just unscrew.... easy.

Tried unscrewing tonight - anticlockwise - and it doesn't want to budge. It's just twisting up the rubber joint that I don't want to break. scared

Can you suggest *how* I just unscrew confused2

There is always the possibility of a previous owner super-gluing it in place as they were a bugger for coming loose.. which is really irritating.

Try using a hairdryer (not a V6) on the knob, the heat should break the joint, but cover the gaiter. Locktite should keep it firm on reassembly.
If necessary wrap a few layers of masking tape round the stick, and hold with Mole Grips. Round jawed will work best.
