Its a difficult and irritating problem. Like many on here, I am comfortable in my retirement and if I was to write off the toy car tomorrow with no insurance to cover, it wouldnt change my life in any way. But having worked hard and saved hard all my life to get into this position, I find it impossible to be casual about the depreciation of the car due to mileage. So I end up wondering if I can "afford" the 2000 miles that would be involved in taking the car to le Mans or the 3000 going to Maranello.
Yes, I know that this is stupid and I am being stupid. But being "careful" in the yorkshire sense of that word is just as much an addiction as I found smoking to be. Using it without insurance is the stupidity..To get back on topic, it really matters not how many miles you actually do providing you enjoy doing it. If you're the sort that whittles about not being able to use it 'because..' etc then as Kev says, it ain't the car for you. It all boils down to why you own it in the first place, I guess. I'm not a collector. Pretty sure that when a guy like Howard uses 'if' as a conditional clause conjunction, he means he isn't actually driving uninsured...

My comment was rhetorical.

After struggling through "conditional clause conjunction" in wikipedia - well yes. I think. And it is insured. Good to see Kevfitz that I am not the only Yorkshireman with this hang up. Anyway, back to the original subject. Cars do wear out. They do mostly get to the point where repair is a pointless waste of money, and cars that are expensive when new become even more expensive to keep going in old age. At what mileage this happens is indeterminate but probably somewhere between 100 and 150k miles. So unless you think that your Aero is another 250GTO in the making and likely to be worth squillions in its old age, a 30k miles example is maybe 30% used up. And there is another factor making this more significant than used to be the case - the arrival of electronics. Its one thing to remake a crankshaft, its another altogether to remake an ECU

the desire/need to keep absolute originality is high on the cost factor for a car. If it is a unique car or one with special history then perhaps a cost to consider. If the car is a standard off the line one then if an upgrade/new engine/mods is needed to keep it on the road then provided you are happy with the cost then go ahead. Perhaps the monetary return on the upgrade costs may not be there but if I was enjoying the car then no problem. It might be an alternative to get another car. When I had the '93 4/4 I was looking at changes/upgrades. Should I spend on the car or change to another? I was drawn to a Plus8 so spent on that instead. There are a couple more upgrades to be done on her but really only when they coincide with a need to change parts. Then, look to the upgrade. I did that with the shocks. Upgraded to AVO from Tim Ayers when my original Konis at the rear needed changing. Got all 4 done. Would I change the Plus8? HMMMMMM...... I like the new Plus8. The Roadster looks good too. So does the M3W. Oh dear!!!!!! Dilemma time.

I sold my MGBV8 because after two years of rebuilding it, I couldn't face getting it too dirty or wet. It was never about the value though. In fact I left the mileage true at over 90,000. It sold easily by word of mouth. Morgans are different simply because they are still being made so are not 'precious' in the same way that a classic car is. I never consider the resale value of the Morgan because I'm not planning on selling either. The low depreciation is a bonus, and it does help when interest rates are so low, which means that money sitting in savings accounts does nothing much. When Mr Bumble was sitting in BHM up for sale, most people who looked at it were worried about the resale value of a yellow car. This attitude is unfathomable to me. The truth is, there will always be somebody out there who loves yellow (or orange) cars. So if these colours are rare you have a sure fire buyer, once they see it. I've salivated over a yellow Plus 8, a yellow Roadster, and "that orange Aeromax", well........ When we chose yellow on the new Morgan, I never gave a thought to resale value. It's not even on the radar. So we go out in the wet and it's fantastic. Life's too short................

I guess it's mostly down to if you're an enthusiast or an investor..... Mines tucked up for the winter and I won't use it again until the sun is shining. Nothing to do with keeping the mileage low, I just don't enjoy driving it in the cold/rain. Not owned the car a year yet so can't really give an informed opinion, but not too concerned about mileage going up.

I don't cleaning cars much but love a clean car though that's changing
I'd been using my Aero even if damp and so it became quite dirty and I have to say a special car when dirty looks cool and even more satisfying to clean it

Me too, a Aero s1 is an outrageous car, If I had the choice I'd either have bright red or bright yellow. Simon

Simon, you are a man of good taste!
Chap who bought my S1 (bright yellow) was very much in my mould and bought on condition. He'd seen an S3 that had much lower mileage than the 67k km on mine, yet the interior was quite tatty and bodywork showed some corrosion.
It's all down to condition and if I sold mine for top money it's because it was in MHO a well cared for and loved car.
Cheers
Philip
