As a post script, I did sell the car on but in doing so, I advised the purchaser it had been reshelled, I enclosed a copy of a letter I sent the DVLA and the old and new MSA logbooks.

Cant see the problem myself,no end of cars get rebuild, restored, reshelled, from bits from other cars. most rally cars have in their lifetime. The only dogey bit i see in this sale is selling the MOT.

There is a world of difference between the V5 based 'restoration' and restoring a pile of bits.

The fraudulent approach is often taken by Land Rover owners, ie the coil sprung V8 engined Series one. Avoidance of SVA (or whatever it's called this week), vehicle tax and the use of black and white numberplates.

There is a many page thread on Pistonheads on this issue. 117 pages worth... Ringing kit thread on Pistonheads

The main problem with these ebay "kits" is when they are sold on valuable cars, Fords suffer with this terribly.

So a typical scenario:

Ebayer has a rotten knackered piles of bits with logbook, vin plate for a desirable car such as a MK1 Escort RS2000.

Dodgy purchaser/car thief buys this item and then goes looking for a mint RS2000.
Purchaser steals car himself (or orders it to be stolen) and then has the tags swapped over/plates made etc. Stores said car until dust has settled then discovers "barn find" RS2000 and sells for massive profit.

Unsuspecting new buyer now has a rung car but nobody is the wiser.

In the 90s is was estimated nearly 50% of all Cosworths had at some point been stolen, there are a lot of cars out there wearing registrations/vins they never used to.

Sad really, not relevant much in this case as its usually only desirable classics that suffer this.

I love the Crungely-Walsinghams, especially the early ones with the Whip Snidney Brew engines Tim

There's not many that would have had your skills to maintain them though, Stewart.

The underslung throcket spline couplings would give terrible trouble if not broached regularly. I've still got one of the old brass broggler notches somewhere, complete with its original leather merkin.

Those were the days, eh?

The only thing I've found to better an original leather merkin is a soiled neoprene sprotwongler when used with a dikron stomblewaz.
