Also been like that for many years in N Ireland, also cars tested at dedicated, super size, high tech MOT centres and not garages. You might get those as well.

God forbit, because now its possible to get a sensible pragmatic approach from a garage. For example, I removed the pillion seat on my bike at day 1 because SWMBO wont ride on this bike. But since the bike still has its pillion footpegs on, that would be an MoT failure with an officious bureaucratic government station. As it is my garage is hot on real safety issues but flexible on the pen pusher ones.

That's how it is in Belgium (as long as I can remember). The first MOT is in the 4th year and the second is in the 6th (except with towbar +750kg = every year). Then it's every year at dedicated, super size, high tech MOT centres and not garages.

This purely a discussion element at present (text from a DoT email):

"The Department for Transport is seeking views on whether the age a vehicle gets its first MOT should be increased from 3 to 4 years.
Options being looked at
The options being proposed are:
to keep the current period for vehicles requiring a first MOT at 3 years, with no change
to increase the age all vehicles get their first MOT from 3 to 4 years
to increase the age cars and motorcycles get their first MOT from 3 to 4 years, but keeping it at 3 years for vans in classes 4 and 7
Find out more about how the proposed changes will work and give your views."
