After some debate in another thread, I now have pannier mounting sorted and a pair of panniers fitted. I went for Givi TRK46N 46 litre panniers. One thing I missed on the web when ordering them (could not find any locally in stock to look at) is that these are around 5kg each when empty. They are plenty big enough and I am hoping that the weight when full will be around the 12-14kg mark. These were £168 each from Ghostbikes who keep them in stock. My local J&S Accessories told me that they could not get anywhere near this price. They did do me a favour though. The pannier mounting brackets seem to be £90+ a pair and come with a variety of side arms to suit specific models of motorcycle. I was confused as to which one to get. J&S in Nottingham sold me an unused pair from their in store demonstrator system for £40 the pair. These have a surface mounting bracket which is a bit unsightly and which I may remove once the panniers have had a trial run fully loaded.

These are the P-Clips I used - available from Amazon and Stainless Steel. All are fastened with M6x16 button head screws and self locking nuts.


The panniers fit very closely to the frame at the "lower" end of the pannier - over these lugs. This prevented me from using P-Clips. The lugs are fitted to the frame using M6 countersunk screws. The sleeves that these screw into are tapped, but not all the way through. I ran an M6 tap all the way through and used M6x25 screws to pass through the bracket at this point into a P-Clip fixed on by a self locking nut.


One corner is not fixed down yet and will require some fabrication. I will see if this is needed and have a plan involving a short length of stainless bar and some P-Clips.

PaulF, I had a look at pannier systems a couple of years ago, namely Givi. I was tempted but held back due to cost. I have a "Bootbag" that fits our needs at the moment but won't rule panniers out.
I like the capacity/security aspects indeed. My luggage rack is similar to yours but has flat bars to the overrider mounting pins not round like yours.

That's a great job, with 2 46-litre cases you'll have plenty of capacity too.

Dare I say 'hers and hers' with a squishy bag for Monsieur on the back shelf, I wonder..?

It'd be nice to think you could have some inner bags to the panniers that you could simply walk in & out of hotels with instead of the dirty case thing..

is already plotting luggage domination. She seems strangely unhappy about the mere 20% increase in volume achieved compared to the old Samsonite that was used in the past.

I believe there are fitted bags for some panniers.

Paul that's an impressive piece of work The use of P clips is a great idea. We use them all the time on aircraft, especially those with steel tube construction like the Auster and the Kitfox. Amazing what they'll hold. But, as you've hinted, one of the universal laws: Luggage Expands to Fit the Space Available - means you'll need to start planning for the next model

And you are right - however I suspect her concern is more to do with the fact that two equal sized cases means that her clothes now have to fill 50% of the available space - in the single Samsonite of the past, I suspect she got more than 75% of the space. Time will tell.

they are not key locked , right ?

They are key locked. A single key unlocks the pannier and also allows it to be removed from the rack. It is not possible to remove the key from the lock in the unlocked position - so no danger of leaving them on the rack unlocked.
