There is a much cheaper option than buying two homes. Buy one in the place where you see yourself spending the most time and rent a holiday home for the other times. The money you would spend on buying and the upkeep buys you a lot of holidays and you get to be in different locations too.
You also turn up and don't spend the first few days fixing everything and cleaning up! Roger, all sensible and all true. BUT... - Rent is dead money. It won't appreciate - it's just gone - If you have investible capital, where else to put it? - There's an emotional comfort in places you truly own. - In life the best experiences are often on a whim. Why not drive to the holiday home after the party, just for the thrill of waking up somewhere else. No planning, no booking - just drive

I think this thread should be read in conjunction with the Thoughts as we get older thread  I think people who have lived and worked away from their country of birth are less worried about dealing with different social and health systems. Certainly the availability of a good health system and the reasonable proximity of good health care is a consideration but not an insurmountable obstacle. Driving in France really is a pleasure. By and large the roads are fantastic and not heavily trafficked as the major traffic flow is on the Autoroute network. For me Portugal lacks good coastal harbours for small yachts but much as I love sailing I do not get out as often as I would like so a guess it is something I could sacrifice.

For me Portugal lacks good coastal harbours for small yachts but much as I love sailing I do not get out as often as I would like so a guess it is something I could sacrifice.
Someone (who is frighteningly wealthy) once told me: "If it is stationary, or not made any more - own it. If they are still making it, especially if it moves - rent it". He applied this to his women. I'm not advocating this extreme, but on this same maxim you could charter a boat whenever you need one.

You are making me confront how many of my 'rational' choices are emotionally-led (ie Maslov comforts). But I think I'm wired that way, just as other folks think money buys "stuff" rather than choice, peace of mind etc
