Thanks Dave, It seems mine does have the Mazda 'box after all......I thought it was good

I always understood the gearbox on my March 2011 Plus 4 to be a Mazda. Just checked the bell housing and it has 2 concentric rings cast into it, as Dave suggested. It's certainly a lot smoother operating than my friend's 2010 Plus 4 which we believe has the Ford box. Does the position of reverse vary between the two makes? My reverse is over to the right and back towards the rear.

2012, BMW 520d Touring Don't you find the position of reverse on the Polo gearbox annoying (on the 5 speed manual, that is). I keep trying to find reverse in the position the Morgan has it. With the Polo it is also too easy to think you are in first when it has inadvertently been left in reverse.

Rang the factory today, apparently all cars from 2013 use the MX5 box with certainty, may just have to have a look at the box and see which is installed for those before that date.

It's classic Morgan. Everything is hard to pin down precisely. Even when changes are documented, 'no production line' means that two cars through the factory together could be very different. Try putting a book together

It's classic Morgan. Everything is hard to pin down precisely. Even when changes are documented, 'no production line' means that two cars through the factory together could be very different. Try putting a book together Try supplying parts for them..... Simon @ SiFab.co.uk

This thread has made me wonder why MMC didn't use the Mazda 1600cc MX 5 DOHC motor with the MX5 box.

I guess the issue was that the 1.6 was discontinued around 2005. Its power output is in the same ball-park as the Sigma that Morgan do use so would likely have done the job very well.
The mazda DOHC in the MX5 has to shift more weight than the Sigma does with Morgan so its perhaps unfair to compare them. They both respond to revs very well and are great power-units but i feel the Sigma is the slightly smoother engine. Also the mazda motor is keen to drink petrol in a way the Sigma just refuses to do...
I wonder what the Sigma would be like in my MX5? !!
