We get a lot and I pass the phone to the kids and they just sit there say "hello" usually lasts about 1 minute before they hang up.

I keep getting people saying they are collecting outstanding debts on behalf of student loans phoning me up. Given I am 70 years old and student loans did not exist when I was at university, I am sure they are just scammers. I say to them: "just wait while I go and get the paperwork" and leave them hanging on, wasting their money. They usually disconnect after about 5 minutes silence.

There is a lovely sound clip on Youtube of someone scamming back a telemarketer, by saying they are police investigating a murder of the person the cold caller was calling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvJQxgtJW94

Not a phone call, but this was in my Inbox this morning allegedly from: <digital-no-reply@amazon.co.uk>

"Please update your payment information

Dear ,

Your Amazon Prime membership is set to renew in less than a month. Mail had Amazon graphics (which haven't copied across), but there are two giveaways.
One: "Dear ," - but no name
Two: I don't have a Prime account. rofl

These scammers are getting better. grin2

Absolutely, Graham! It angers me that these buggers get away with stuff like this, and saddens me that there are so many people who get caught out due to ignorance, when a few simple practices can avoid coming to grief.

Exactly.
Always contact the organisation or business through your normal log in procedure.
NEVER, EVER, click on a link that asks you to verify anything,
Similarly don't down load a delivery note or invoice unless it is a pdf file attached to an e-mail and is expected.

The BT thingy is called BT Call Protect, and I have just joined.
Only two numbers barred so far, but there is scope to bar all of those pesky callers (with resolved real numbers).
I have one particularly tenacious caller from Coventry, but that may be a ruse (an international caller with a UK-based number).

On the 'you have a problem with your PC' scam, I once had a caller telling me there was a problem with my Windows PC.
What a knob; we only have an Apple iMAC.

I wonder if that's an option for me as Talktalk business supplies both phone and broadband albeit on BT infrastructure.

They are not the cheapest but extremely good service record for me, if there are line faults they are acting within 2 working days with Openreach at the latest.

Richard,
We are also with Talk Talk and, like everyone else, we get these calls. swear The last one said he was calling from the windows office so I had quite a long call about my double glazing but I am concerned about staying on the line too long. Does anyone have any idea if these gits can do anything whilst you are talking to them?
As for call blocking, Talk Talk gave me this code to block all future calls from the last dodgy number:-
Dial14258 then press * twice after call. To report scam, 0800 0832710

Reg,

Thanks very much for that I shall put that into action next time one of them calls, and report it onward.

Look at Tom Mabe's site. There is a lovely one where he gets the local deli to feed some homeless folk. It's the No 1 in his list.

I recently received the following e-mail proporting to be from the Inland Revenue.
It was with all the right logos which unfortunately did not copy over and it included a link for me to click on in order to claim my tax refund.
Needless to say I did not click on it, but instead followed the advice at the bottom of the e-mail.

HMRC confirmed that they NEVER send out e-mails like this

GOV.UK eGovernment
