Absolutely Heinz (I'm not sure if some of my comrades got the irony!) I'm well aware the ME 109 was the equal, if not in some ways a better machine. Like much of the engineering that comes out of Germany. As it happens I will be flying in a vintage Spitfire in 3 months time - one that took part in WWII. Hoping to get a photo of the Aero sat in front of it to post on here. The worrying part is I have to wear a parachute whilst flying!!!

Just hope you don't need to use said 'chute Rob. The ME109 was another iconic fighter of the period. It's a shame that the Hurricane is often ignored in favour of the Spitfire...

You and me both Graham!!! Probably ought to start another thread!!! "iconic vintage aircraft"!! Best get back to S5 Niggles. For all the niggles I've had I took the car to a customer of mine yesterday since we had glorious sunshine. People were hanging out the windows and walking out to it when on site - drooling over it. Not so sure they'd have done the same over an AM Vantage or the Jag F-Type. It certainly is unique and eye catching.....niggles aside it's really redeeming itself.

Beside thread drift...have a very enjoyable flight with the Spitfire, Rob At least she will have the "Miss Shillings Orifice" tuning on board (if they have not altered the fueling system anyway over the decades) so you hopefully will not need the parachute.

According to those in the know, the 109 varied according to the variant. The G Gustav was apparently quicker but heavier and it seems that the F may have been the most rounded of the model. I must admit that the TA152 variant of the FW190 appears to take some beating.

My late mother was working on RAF Pembrey the day they were gifted An FW 190. The family did not believe her when she got home.

Years ago I had an older friend who was a young pilot in Germany at the very end of the war. When he realised it was virtually all over he flew his ME109 behind Soviet lines to his home village, landed in a field and in civilian clothes he and his wife walked out of Germany eventually arriving as refugees in Italy and then from there arrived in Australia. Like many WW2 ex-servicemen he never spoke about his experiences.
I was with him in a club one day when he happened to meet an ex Spitfire Pilot. It was an incredible experience to hear them both reminiscing about their wartime exploits, without any rancour, was quite incredible. You would almost think that they played on opposing football teams rather than trying to kill each other.
I remember little of the conversation now, it was a long time ago and I have long since lost touch with him. I guess if he is still alive he would be over 95 years old now.

If I swapped the Aero, it would have to be for a Weismann MF4 or MF5 GT.....but being hand built cars again, I'm not sure they would fare any better than a Morgan........and they're German.......as opposed to British so it would be like choosing an ME109 over a Spitfire.....I couldn't do it!! :-)
Great! A chance to pontificate. In business ( engineering manufacture ) I spent almost as much time in Germany as I did in the midlands and had lots of chances to watch people at work on the factory floor. There was a significant difference in attitudes between German and British workers and it wasnt an issue of who worked harder or even who had the best machinery. It was much more about "seriousness" in the sens that Germans use that word. About sticking to the prescribed system of work, about being careful and conscientious. The German workers, and I accept this is a sweeping generalisation, stuck to what they had been told to do, to the rules so to speak. In contrast British workers had to show their individuality and the fact that they knew best by fiddling with the controls of machinery, by doing things their own way and a bit different from their mates. I wondered if this was just my view and then I spoke to a pal who ran a MacDonalds franchise group and he said the same thing- his biggest problem was getting british people to stick to the rules and work the way the company wanted. All of this is a long winded way of saying that in all likelyhood, the Weissman would be better built that the Aero.

...and there I was expecting the punchline to be something about the Spitfire vs the ME109. You're probably right, mind you.
