Just wondering what the normal oil pressure is for a 2.0 Duratec and whether it should remain static or vary according to engine speed/load. General ranges for conditions would be helpful.
Also do these car engines smell a bit once hot and have been driven quit hard. Noticed mine ponging a bit, though all the unsual signs of it being knackered aren't there.

Sounds like a possible dose of mechanical hypochondria !
Your engine oil pressure will rise as revs rise until it reaches the blow off point of the pressure relief valve. As the engine is run and the oil warms the blow off point will increase rev wise and the pressure below that will drop a bit. I am not familiar with the Duratec in detail but if oil pressure is above 20psi at idle hot and 50 psi or so at high revs, no worry. The pressure is only there to circulate the oil and cool bearings. The components ride on a ramp of oil created by rotation.
As for the smell - what smell. Steel smells when hot. So do plastics and rubber. Or a kipper tied to the exhaust as some bastard did at my wedding.

You should see anything up to 4 bar from cold. As the oil heats up it will fall to around 2 bar running and 1 bar, or a bit less at idle. Give or take.
Hot smells are part of the experience!

Agree with Dave & Howard on oil pressures. Bear in mind, one bar is about 14 psi. Isn't it strange that Mondeo man will happily drive thousands of trouble free miles without a thought on oil pressure, yet once we have a pressure gauge, we start to worry! A case of too much information! As far as the pong is concerned after a quick run, it's most probably the catalytic converter, which gets a real roasting when the motor is working hard. Put your hand on top of the off-side wing after a good run and you'll feel the heat.

Hi AndyR, When I had a Duratec +4 mine had a strange smell after I had been out in it, I had it for 3 years and no harm came from the smell, I put it down to the cat smelling (cat as in catalytic converter not the feline variety!!)

Me to, had a late Escort that gave off the most obnoxious smells from the cat. and i had many interesting chats about where they were coming from.

There have been complaints on some American forums that are fitted with oil pressure gauges that don't actually show the oil pressure: apparently they just move the needle to a "normal" pressure indication. A sort of binary indicator that either shows there is oil pressure or there is none. Apparently done to stop owners worrying about oil pressure.

There are a number of cars in the UK that do the same Peter - Jaguars being one...

Isn't it strange that Mondeo man will happily drive thousands of trouble free miles without a thought on oil pressure, yet once we have a pressure gauge, we start to worry! ...Entirely agree. Same goes for coolant temperature - I don't need numbers, just a half-dial with a small blue bit on the left, a small red bit on the right and a big black "normal" bit in the middle. Just like real cars
