Seems it's worthwhile again in recent times. Mrs SBM woke me at 2.30am to say she's seen someone (as she thought) trying door handles of the vans in the street outside. Our bedroom window was open and as she was on the phone to the Police, I kept watch...as you do...
And blow me..! Back he came. He was carrying something, but all dressed in black complete with black burglars bobble hat for full effect.
Seems this morning that he was in the midst of siphoning diesel from various cars and vans.
And before you ask, no they didn't come out to catch him..

With diesel hitting £1.23 a litre its not entirely unexpected.

Thefts also went up when there was rationing due to strikes/wars etc. I remember  having a bigger allowance as she is a district nurse. She had a nominated local garage to use in agreement with NHS, but got some comments (  ) from some when getting fuel. Arwyn is spot on too.....higher cost induces desire to have/make a profit.

Near it's peak in fuel price, the towrags were even drilling holes in fuel tanks to get to fuel. I guess the anti-syphoning gizmo in filler pipes did work on some cars...

I had diesel siphoned out of my landcruiser 2 years ago right by my house in a culdesac , i only had around 5 gallons in luckily but I ran out of fuel trying to get to a fuel station which was a pain !

Theft of heating oil is common around this area, lots of homes in remote locations and police seldom seen.
Lots of diesel vehicles here too, I'll keep a look out for men in black then.

What our local crims seem to be doing is to following the heating oil trucks so they know where they have delivered to then go back later and nick the fuel.

Has happened around here but mainy oil heating tanks get targeted, one local guy got caught and he turned out to be a delivery driver for the oil company! no problem for him finding the tanks and access points..

Last year we had 900lt of red diesel removed during Appleby Fair week,they cut a hole in a hawthorn hedge,cut off the padlocks and helped there self,the funny thing was that the fuel had water contamination!

Heating oil has been a target for several years. Usually used in rural areas due to convenience (no gas etc).
