Does anyone know about these. My daughter wants to buy one. I seem to remember those rotary engines drink oil...But are they reliable?
Any comments appreciated.
Nick

My son wants one too (or a Gen 2 RX7)

I'm not too clued up about 8's but in the 80's I used to rebuild 7's engines for Mazda warranty. Straightforward enough but needed to be done well and carefully or issues followed. They were reliable enough though if looked after. I think I still have some of the specialist tools.

My only reservation would be as with anything out of the norm, specialist stuff, low volume, usually means higher prices when you need work doing.

But not excessively.
I used to own a GEn1 RX-7. In many ways wish I still did...

However, what they do use a lot of is... petrol.
Thirsty beasts, but go well. Very smooth. Never driven an RX-8 though. If she buys one Nick, will she take me out for a spin in it? smile Please??

High emissions = high road tax but perhaps better after April 1st, 2017
Effectively a total loss oil system so oil levels need careful monitoring.
Can have hot-starting issues.
Rotor tip issues seem to have been resolved.
Cheap to buy because of their reputation for high fuel consumption and road tax.
Better than many people would have you believe.

The rotary engine is effectively as two stroke and it drinks fuel. Average 26mpg see here 10.7 litres/100km = 26.4 mpg

What a great forum.thanks for the instant info gents. I think it may be worth pursuing carefully. They do seem to be good value.

Not sure you'd enjoy it Graham. Her first car was an MgB and she's a.......Spirited driver. When she goes for a spin she usually ends up pointing the wrong way...........

The April road tax adjustment may work in her favour then.

I'll let you know if she buys one.

I think they are super cool. Love the suicide doors and the way the front wheels almost look like they are in shields

The April road tax adjustment will only apply (as in previous road tax changes) to new cars purchased after the new rules come into force.
Nick, I'll bring a blindfold. Though as a former MGB owner I doubt I'll need it laugh2
