Hi there, has anyone done the classic rear end suspension conversion to their Morgan? I have just completed the front end conversion and am about to tackle the rear. Are there any pictures on here of successful jobs? What type of frames are best for a narrow bodied car. There is very little room vertically between the springs and the underside of the rear parcel shelf so how do they achieve enough vertical movement with new telescopic shock absorbers? Peter
Yep... the hoop type system is what I put onto the sprint car. The version with a lot of clearance above the diff.
I didn't use Spax or Koni as both can have the adjusters smashed and siezed by bottoming out the dampers where-as the Avo adjustables are adjustable via an external dial (which others arn't) and come in the correct lengths. (I have the part numbers somewhere)
They are a bit of a "Mother" to fit as space is tight and getting the ideal geometary is not easily achieved... also get some decent drill-bits!
Somewhere on the internet there are other articles on this conversion and a discussion on damper choice.
A cheaper way - if you're not racing, might be to go up one grade of oil in the lever arm dampers. Probably going to do this with my 4/4 - now the front end is sorted, I need to bring the rear under control a little more! Cheers,

What kind of damper oil do you use? We can get Penrite and Millers over here. Do they have different grades?
And while I'm at it. Is there a source for Armstrong Selectaride dampers? I know they are not very effective but it niggles me since 1967 that I hadn't the money to include them when I ordered my 4/4.
Thank you John, The article is exactly what I need to read Peter
My pleasure. These guys sell the bits. I have to say everyhting I bought from them has been good stuff. http://hoem.getmedemo.co.uk/cgi-bin/viewPage.cgi?linkName=viewProducts&__view__productListingView=SELECT%20FROM%20`Standard%20product`%20WHERE%20`Standard%20product`.`section`.`__elementId__`%20=%201400&__view__catagoryDesciptionView=SELECT%20FROM%20`Product%20section`%20WHERE%20`Product%20section`.`__elementId__`%20=%201400

Thank you John (the helpful) great site for all Morgan stuff.. I have just received a quote from the Morgan dealer in Melbourne for the sum of just over $1400.00 AU. That is for the latest hoop type. Chris even sent me some pictures that he took at the Motor show in Melbourne last year. They are very clear and show just how everything goes,I will post them here when I get my other computer fixed (registry problems)the pics are on that computer sadly, or is that sadly on that computer? Hmmm
computer now fixed so here are the 3 pics that I received from Morgan Australia concerning the rear suspension conversion "KIT" notice in pic 1 the rubber pad in the centre of the hoop. If the axle hit that "bump stop" the car would be cactus, me thinks... Pic 1a shows the position of the brake cable in today's cars
I fitted the tubular hoop conversion to my 4/4 about 8 years ago, together with Spax dampers. I had heard of the issue with Konis losing their adjustment once they's bottomed out, but I didn't know it was also possible with the Spax dampers.
I must have been lucky, because I can still adjust mine (just took them up a couple of clicks as we're off to France at the end of next week, and we'll be carrying luggage).
