Years ago we were on hols in Salcomb. I pucked up a book there.... Colditz Story by Pat Reid. I read it in almost a single session. Tremendous. It was the basis for the film and tv series.

I still have a copy sitting on the shelf for the same reason Giles. Perhaps I'd better make that the next book after the Leica M one, currently being disturbed by the arrival of various periodicals...

Just finished: Jazz Music by David Sneath At the height of the Second world War ordinary men from all walks of life are being called up to action and adventure, to serve their country and fight against the threat of the Nazi war machine. Among the most noted war heroes of the time are those who risk it all to fly their payloads into the heart of Germany and back: the boys of RAF bomber command. In 1943, aware that men’s lives can be changed – or ended – in the blink of an eye, the twenty-four hours before an operation are fraught with uncertainty and a fierce desire to live. This is the story of seven men, the bomber crew of a battle-scarred Lancaster christened ‘Robin’s Hoods’, and at heart it is the story of how the conflict altered the paths of those who otherwise would have been destined never to meet.
Particularly interesting since the crew all hailed from Nottinghamshire and the book references many familiar places. I cannot remember where I got the recommendation from - I thought it was this thread but cannot find it here. If it was someone on TM - thank you.

Gosh, is anyone reading anything which is not about WWII ?
I am also reading (by accident) a book set in the closing years and aftermath of WWII - 'Gravity's Rainbow' by Thomas Pynchon. It's one of those books which other writers often cite as an influence - more like a distraction from their own writing, it's not an easy book.
I thought that like most '70s post-modern novels it would be set contemporaneously, so the WWII setting was a surprise to me.
Well, at least I feel like a proper member of TM now, previously I wouldn't knowingly pick up a factual book, let alone one about war history.

Very few. Just finished Maquis by George Millar following recommendations on this thread. And before that Warlike Sketches by Arroll Macfarlane. So time to break the warlike trend and return to Jonathan Franzen's latest, Purity. Unlike The Corrections it didn't grab me from the beginning but now, about a third in, I'm hooked again. He does messed up characters very well.

Just finished The Muse x Jessie Burton
Great writer. It flashes back from WW2 in Spain to the UK of the 70s.
Recommended read.
And also How the West was Won x Dee Brown.
I have been interested in Native American Indians since I was a boy and this book is an authority. Full of tribe details and the chronology of the West development.
I now feel even more sorry for the indigenous Indians.
This is a heavy tome and can be hard going in places - but I can recommend it if you are interested in US History.
All your childhood Western characters are in there - but in context. Great stuff.
