Hi.
I believe that year car was still using the bishops steering box like that of a 60's Morgan.
If so the tight or "high spot" in the steering center on is normal. Yes you disconnect the drag link to find steering center on and you can make your adjustment to the box to adjust play out. You also want to make sure their is oil in the box and fill to top. I use a small clean flat head screwdriver to use as a dip stick to determine level is correct.
You have to get the right feel for the adjustment so it is not too tight. I think your car may like a 60's and earlier Morgan will have a felt bushing at top of column and this should be in good conditioned and oiled. Make sure their is no binding in the column.
Have you performed a complete service on the car? There are many lubrication points and tricks as well as procedures for tightening the floor boards, transmission tunnels, fuel tank and body bolts.
It is also imperative to evaluate the condition of both the front end and rear suspension springs as worn out springs can lead to rear chassis pounding and kickup.

Thanks Broljo and Peter. Broljo - sounds obvious once you have explained it!!!! I will get that sorted shortly.

Peter - the column is good - all free and checked - the car is fully serviced from front to back - oils changed, everything greased etc etc.

I'll feedback once I make the adjustments.

Folks - again many thanks for the replies - As I stated I would feedback after getting the chance to make adjustments.

After disconnecting the track rod ends I was able to find the central position of the steering box and low and behold the connection between the steering connector arm to the track rod had to be adjusted about 1 inch toward the driver side. After a final adjustment of the steering box I now have very little play at all and equal steering in each direction. What I don't understand is how this could have ever been so far out. The car hasn't been driven in years, however it seems that someone has botched it up at some stage in the past.

Hopefully will get a test drive over the weekend and I know its going to be a much better steering experience.
