May I just point out hat Napoli and the Nordkapp are located in different directions when starting from UK innocent

Dont forget insect repellents when heading for the Nordkapp!

Find out where the planned roadworks will be in Italy, getting stuck in the heat can be a challenge in any car.

Been caught in Italian and German roadwork inspired slow traffic, not pleasant even with aircon when it's very hot.

Thanks Hannes - I was looking for the tips for long haul trips and remember being impressed by the team that went to Nordkapp. I figure they will have faced pretty much everything.

Thanks for the heads up on the traffic Mark. Those are the sorts of issues I had not thought of.

I know I can get a French Toll Road beacon, do I need the same for Italy ?

Up to now individual toll payments on most of the the Italian Autostradas. Most toll boxes accept credit cards but once in a while cash is required.

In Italy there's an automated toll payment called Telepass. It used to be reserved to the owners of an italian bank account, but I've heard that there are companies providing Telepass to foreign people. It's pretty useful because you can skip the queues for the toll payment, just need to take the correct yellow marked Telepass lane.
Another viable option is the use of the pre-paid pay-as-you-go card (Viacard): you can buy them at the motorway booths, or at the Punto-Blu shops and event at most tobacconist.
You should also be able to get a refund for the unused credit at the Punto Blu shops, but honestly I never tried this.
The third option is just to use any credit card, but I experienced occasional malfunctioning of the automated booths (the same used for viacards, but no problems with them)

You can't do a great deal to an aero at the side of the road. On all of the trips I've been on we've not had any major issues.

Take a few cans of tyre fixing stuff and a pump as spares can be hard to come by. We experienced this on the original lap of Scotland. Take some spare fuses as well.

Other than that no other issues.

On the Nordkapp trip we managed to damage a sump but managed to fix this in a a Quick Fit type place with some heat resistant mastic. Strangely they let us use the workshop and just watched.

We did plan a head knowing the roads were likely to be poor after the winter we ran the aero and +8 on 18in wheels to provide a little more give.

Most importantly take some cash to pay your fines smile

This is where I normally get caught out.
