If you check your insurance policy most say to and from work. Not use for work purposes! My friend works for Water board which he used to come home in a van because he had to be out first thing miles from the base. Now he has to travel 30 miles to pick up the van, which is in his own time ! And return it even though he is passing his house .

Oh, last point, the Company will not pay for Avis to collect and deliver....
At least my Company gave us the option so Enterprise delivered and picked up the car from my home, which was a 50mile round trip per journey. These systems are bonkers, it was a Government Department . I had done 35 years on mileage for my previous large private sector company no problems.
Peter I have experienced just that, my last day is 31 March this year and they have encouraged me to retire with a rather nice payout. Our Travel policy is set by me, and I also have a No Hire Car policy after a long haul flight (>8hrs)especially in a foreign country. Taxi is the way to go, or arrange for someone in that countries office to pick you up. We had to many near misses in LHD countries by our Australian Travellers being confused by the roundabouts that seem to be numerous at every airport. We did have some countries, usually S.E. Asia that we had a no self drive policy unless you were a resident of more than 6 months (To allow our expats to have cars)

As a civvie in the police if we needed to use a pool car we had to be assessed by a driving instructor first. is a Community Nurse. When she started we bought her a car to use. That changed when the Crown Car lease system became available. It was cheaper for her to have one, brand new every 3 years with a cheap monthly lease cost based on annual mileage that covered all on the road costs apart from private use fuel and agreed mileage to cocer insurance etc..It was taxable but still a great bargain. They were usually Fiesta sized cars and it was a no-brainer to get. The cheapest new cars we have had. The whole family were covered as drivers too so both children could drive them. Mind you, the people in admin were useless when it came to changing the car, organising replacement if needed. Very poor fleet management skills. She doesn't have them any more after retiring and being enticed back part time after a spell as a Bank nurse to cover gaps. Shame.....it means if she has the tintop I need to drive the Mog!

I'd agree with 5. We have the same. I live 30 mins from LHR so 5 is a no brainer as a taxi costs way below the price of leaving the car at the car park. I also agree it makes sense from an H&S point. I take the car allowance and just need a 4 door tin top insure for business. My German colleagues have the full blown pool / hire car thing.

If you check your insurance policy most say to and from work. Not use for work purposes! Yes, you need Class 1 Business Cover to use your vehicle in relation to work. The way I see it, work is when you rock up somewhere and do what someone else wants you to do rather than what you want to do. In return they give you money. If they don't want you to use your own car to do work for them, that's up to them.

Don't miss all that corporate bullshit - even with the pending NIC increases Although I'm 'self-employed', I am a full-time employee of a Limited company so I pay Class 1 NICs. But they still get me - as a'Low Cost' company my Flat-Rate VAT contribution goes from 14.5% to 16.5%.

Has anyone tried the argument that this results in extended use of your time and so your collection/return can be accommodated in work hours.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
