Went for a short drive after various M3W housekeeping/repairs and I thought I saw a red flash coming from the small round black plastic flat grommet above the starter button. It happened several times as I was decelerating but only for a split second.
I checked the owners manual and their is no reference to this as being any sort of an indicator. Was I seeing things?

Its the brake warning light. Were you cornering briskly?

Its the brake warning light. Were you cornering briskly? Draggin is right....it's likely that your brake fluid level is low, or falling below the sensor level during sharp cornering. I've experienced the same issue and resolved it easily by simply by topping off the brake fluid container. Be careful not to overfill because the fluid will leak, even if the cap is on tight. I filled mine to within roughly a 1/4" of the top. My dealer instructed me to do this.

I was warned early on the brake and clutch share the same circuit and reservoir , and as the clutch take off from the reservoir is higher than the brake, if the clutch starts feeling heavy or strange , to check the fluid level as it could be an early warning that the brakes might be about to go as well.

Previously I had to do a repair on the rear brake line. It would make sense that it was indicating a low fluid level issue.
The manual eludes to a low fluid level indicator, however, it refers to it in the same paragraph as the parking brake indicator. Since it did not refer to another indicator or location either in print or in the picture of the dash I was a little baffled. Thanks for the clarity.
Also good to know that the hydraulic clutch is run off of the same reservoir.

I don't have the upgraded warning light above the starter button. What I have discovered is that if you let the fluid level drop by a fifth, the brake warning light that is actuated by the emergency brake, will flash momentarily when you corner hard to the right. Scared the heck out me initially because it was just a momentary red flicker and I wasn't sure if it was the brake light or the engine oil. What purpose is the additional warning light supposed to accomplish?

Ken I assume you have the alternative dash with chrome instruments? On the original dash the brake warning is in the speedo (or Tacho?)

Here in America lately anyone who takes a car in with the original Dash is getting told that they have to put a mandatory brake warning light above the starter button.

Who told you that? The dealer? My car is in for service now and the dealer hasn't said anything. Let me know. Thanks.
