Thought this may be handy there is a chap not far away from me who makes wire wheels so he can take one thats very badly damaged and build it back to new be it painted , s/steel , chrome any size .

As confirmed by James, Barry's Tyres has all the kit required to balance wire wheels. Since I got the car they've fitted four and a half sets of tyres to mine without any problems. They also take the trouble to put the weights on the inside of the wheels. Perhaps it's time to bring your antediluvian filing system up to date?

As to getting there, now that the business has relocated to Hawks Road, it couldn't be easier if you're coming from the south. Even the most cerebrally challenged should find it with ease.

There is a chap on here who has a stunning DHC Just lives round the corner from Fox Hunters garage and did not know it was there till I gave him the details a while back , as he was asking about wheels balanced . He may let you have a look at his DHC if you are lucky . One car I would not mind starting on for shows it sort of stands out above other mogs by a mile , leaves mine and others in its shadow .

I remember Normog 1987 the secretary purchased a load of gear with some of the money but no one ever used it . Still be in his garage as no one in it now that can go that far back.

Beamish Morgans up the A1(M) turn off at Chester le Street its about 4 mile up the road to Stanley . Behind Beamish plenty of mogs to look at may if you are good at chatting get a go in a 3 Wheeler etc. Or you can just ogle the Aston Workshop cars ( not all Astons ) . The pub next door belongs to the Aston workshop ( food and drink ) .

How the hell I forgot that its nearer and does mogs everyday along with being straight onto the motorway once off the straight to Stanley road.

Don t mess about with balancing wires as I found out to my cost. It s critical to get the correct cones for fitting and get the weights put inside the rims. MWS have illustrations on their site.

Beamish Morgan did them for me last time, but they put hammer-on outside weights on, which I hate as they damage the rim. Out of interest what are the pros and cons of inside vs outside weights?

I believe that inside only will need more weights. That they are no longer lead also means more weights. And now they can rust unless you paint them.
I really don't mind outside weights on classic wheels.

I agree, Dave. The important thing is that the wheels are correctly balanced, and if that is best done with a weight on the outside then so be it. A quick dab of paint and they are pretty much invisible from more than a couple of feet away anyway.

Clearly inside weights are at a smaller radius from the centre, so would require more weight for the same effect compared to outside. It just seems a shame to hammer them onto the pristine rims. I have stainless wires so it doesn't matter all that much, but with painted or powder coated wires, surely it would damage the finish, and bubbling or corrosion would soon set in.
