Given your TVR heritage a V8 is the only option. I have driven 175k miles in a 1980 +8 with a John Eales 3.9L. 50k miles before that with 3.5L. 3.9 is superb, 3.5 was still fine. If you are using it for weekends and the odd trip who cares about fuel consumption. As others have stated it's down to personal preference. If you are thinking pre-cat then cars are 30+ years old, pay really good attention to the condition of the chassis and woodwork.

For the sake of accuracy the 3.9 V8 is 190bhp and 235ft/lb catalysed. The 3.5 V8 on carbs was 184bhp.
More than adequate in a 940Kg car for most people. I agree. I see no use for unuseable HP.

For me all you need is a 2 litre with around the 210hp mark as per the super sport. You get great fuel economy and peformance and in the real world i doubt if the v6 roadster would leave it for dead in any respect. With the 2 litre duratec / mzr unit its the natural born son of the lawrence tune cars of the past era

I have that super sport Omex engine in my +4 its a versatile unit and hoot to drive if you feel like reving it but tootles along without any fuss when the mood takes.

matter of taste isnt it. the only thing that betters the sound of a tuned 4 pot at 8500 rpm is the sound of a flat plane crank V8 at 8500 rpm. IMO of course.
engines should scream not burble.

I've not got my engine to rev that high, but my tuned 4-cylinder at 6000 rpm sounds good to me, it's got a nice howl to it.

I'll stick with my V6. A more relaxed drive than my old +4 but boy can it travel when it wants to.
Yes it is a matter of choice / taste & long may that go on.
I can't imagine electric motors causing such a thread.
