Good morning Ray,

We have a 2010 Roadster and a couple of years ago had the management light illuminate, I got a very similar unit to the one in your post from EBay, plugged it in, followed the instructions and cleared the fault, strange thing is I have never used it since.
It now resides in the passengers footlocker, just in case, I found the connection lead tucked under the left hand side of the dash on the drivers side.
Good luck

Hi
A mechanic who I know has just connected my pride and joy to his "machine" and the prognosis is fault code PO171 system lean bank 1.
He miraculously "switched" it off and although I have only done a few miles since the light has not come back on.
Any thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.

It's the oxygen sensor, running too lean probably. Too much air? A leak in the inlet gasket? Equally it could be a faulty sensor.

I've found gasket related issues to be rare nowadays, better materials and decent machining I guess but I cant remember the last time I had a gasket issue. Now I've done it quiet

It happens on my Roadster in the cold & wet with cheap fuel. Particularly if I park & the restart after a few minutes.

Doesn't happen often but many Roadster owners have had the same issue.

Not just Roadsters....

My S2 Roadster used to do it, regularly.
My Aero Plus 8 does it too.

Always the same message, I just turn the light off and wait until the next time.

It does seem that only buying Shell V Power or BP Ultimate helps.

Peter, yes I found if you buy cheap petrol and particularly if it sits in the tank a while it happens. My wife's old VW did the same.

I now add a stabiliser to the tank over the winter

Slightly off topic but; during my career at Suzuki, our Field Service Engineers used to have a fuel quality and condition check top of the list, if a newish car or bike displayed odd running characteristics. This was especially so if the OBD was giving normal readings.

I worked out that for the 3000ish miles I do a year in my 4/4, the annual increased cost for filling up with V Power is only approximately £40 over standard Shell petrol or approximately £55 if I bought the cheapest local supermarket petrol.

Interesting. The light on my 2004 roadster comes on more frequently now. After cancelling it a few times i took it to Allon Whites as the glowing light starts to get tedious.
They changed the MAF sensor (ordered in from USA) as it was cracked and discussed the problem with MMC.
The story is that the roadster model is showing this fault more and more as it ages. Current factory thinking is that the ecu becomes too sensitive to delayed signals linked to the general worn condition and dirtiness of the components. Assuming that all potential air leaks have been sorted out the approach is to take the ecu and increase the range parameters a bit to give the signals a chance.ie decrease the minimum and increase the maximum.. The ecu has to go back to the factory, for this operation, allow two weeks?
It will be interesting to see if others have the problem, to build up a body of data.
I am going to see if the MAF sensor gives an improvement, but in any case i will wait until MOT time (September) before i decide to do anything more drastic than switching the light off.
In the meantime car runs like a train, no complaints.

Thanks for all replies.
Being a retired chartered engineer I am much more familiar with 130MW gas turbines , 30 MW diesels and 1 MW pumps.
I gather that the my fault code is not the end game , not even critical and I can take my wife out in my moggy not thinking I may break down .
Thank you to everyone.
