I completed the installation of the fuel tank plate yesterday. I had a local sheet metal shop produce the plate. My preference would have been for aluminum (or aluminium), but they said that would crack at the bend for the flange. Consequently, I specified stainless steel. The vertical portion measures 9" square and the top flange is 2" x 9". Thickness is 0.25", so it's very strong and weighs (I'm guessing) 3-4 lbs. It is bonded to the tank with silicone adhesive.

Looks a nice job, Dan. So hopefully you will sleep better in the knowledge that you have de risked that dodgy weakness.

Think I will look into doing something similar on RTA. Looks a neat job Dan! Cheers,

What was the problem with the tank?

What was the problem with the tank? On older cars like mine, a rear-end collision and consequent forward movement of the fuel tank can cause it to be pierced by the handbrake mechanism (see photos). The plate is there as a reinforcement to prevent this from happening.

[Humour: ON] But, with "an old car like yours", the rear end colision shouldn't be a issue, as the car which is following has better brakes! [/Humour: OFF] (more seriously, in the case of a rear-end colision with a 2 tons modern vehicle the possible hole in your tank will not be the worse of your problems regarding the body work...)

It could well be, with proximity to hot exhausts, sparking electrics etc... Cheers,

Can I suggest you go like hell - and then worry about the front end.
